This was an incredible book, but a total sausage fest.

It gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for being an inspiring, colourful, accessible, engaging volume, and for giving me a grounding in art knowledge that I didn't think possible from one book.

Art is discussed from a Eurocentric position, only ONE female artist is featured and some of the language is culturally insensitive to the modern ear, but this remains an outstanding work.

Thirsty for more now!

Suet624 Glad you got so much out of this! 7mo
Branwen Oooooh this sounds lovely! 💕 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Suet624 @Branwen I adored it. I feel really guilty because I'm now reading The Story of Art Without Men and I'm missing Gombrich's enthusiasm and zeal. He made me care about some truly iffy paintings!!!! Shame it was so bloke-heavy 😅 7mo

Educating ourselves on the history of art.

Pickles says that whilst appreciating the vitality of Rubens' work, she finds it a bit grainy and aesthetically prefers the softness in the portraiture of Raphael...

Just kidding. She's a philistine.

I'm getting a bit of a whistle-shop tour of the history of architecture with The Story of Art.

Gombrich explains things in a simplified, narrative way that makes it easy to understand. I'm hoping this will help me when I go back to the more complicated books on architecture that I was struggling to digest.

I'm looking forward to getting to the paintings though.

@TheAromaofBooks #bookspinbingo

And here's my Bookspin board for Feb.

Feb always flies past so I'm not expecting a Bingo (I was only one off last month!) Still, there are a few lining up nicely...

The_Penniless_Author You better roll a 19! (Or "spin" a 19, or however it works. ?) 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Fantastic!! 9mo

julieclair Thank you for bringing this book to my attention. It‘s going on my Christmas wish list. I have always regretted not having taken Art History in college. 2y

I finished this book after a year hiatus. It‘s exactly what you‘d guess -a history of art, although it largely focuses on the western tradition beginning with the Egyptians and Greeks up to the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s and the “anti-art” of the Dadaists. Gombrich‘s style is extremely accessible to unfamiliar audiences like me who were curious to know who made what in which style for what motivations or message. Plenty of illustrations.

Six huge boxes full of books are in my mother's attic and again I have only one suitcase and a maximum of 23kg. Today I wasn't able to find all the books I want to take back to Japan with me, but tomorrow's another day 😉

tricours Do you live permanently in Japan? 8y
Cinfhen Those stinky airlines with their weight restrictions 😡 8y
Tsubame @tricours Yes, otherwise I wouldn't bother bringing books back with me. Have no idea for how long though 😅 8y

Tsubame @Cinfhen LOL! Indeed! But at the same time I have to keep in mind that I'll have to carry the suitcase 😆 8y
Sarah83 lovely stack. How many languages do you speak? 😄 8y
Texreader When my hubby moved here from Norway he shipped two massive boxes of books (500 or so) literally by ship. That was almost 30 years ago and I had about 500 then too. We merged our libraries and it has grown by the thousands. Anyway, shipping takes a long time but it is an idea. 8y
mhillis Oh I understand!! The struggle is real!! After 10+ years, I have just about everything here now😂 8y
tricours @Texreader I shipped mine from northern Sweden to Norway ten years ago by truck. I can't imagine having to ship overseas 😳 8y
Texreader Right! Very frightful what may happen to them. Did you live in Norway? Where? My husband is from Bergen but was born in Trondheim. 8y
tricours @Texreader I still live in Norway! Lived in Oslo, then Holmestrand, now on the island Nøtterøy, right next to Norway's oldest town, Tønsberg ? Bergen and Trondheim are both great! 8y
Texreader Oh I thought you lived in Japan. I've been to Norway lots to see the family. Last year we drove across Norway from Oslo to Bergen via Lillehammer. Beautiful!! 8y
tricours @Texreader that's Tsubame, she's obviously a bit more adventurous, and I'm guessing... German? Or just very fond of German books, @Tsubame? Mandy does sound very American... 8y
Tsubame @tricours You're right, I'm German, but my grandfather was American ^^ 8y
Tsubame @Sarah83 I speak German and English fluently, my Italian is getting a bit rusty but I get back into it quickly and in French it's just enough to get by, although I understand quite a lot. My Japanese still leaves a great lot to be desired, but I'm working on it 😆 8y
Tsubame @mhillis 10+ years, wooooow! Well after such a long time I think I should have most of my books in Japan too ^^ 8y
Sarah83 Wow. I'm impressed. 😀 so many languages? I can hardly deal with German and English. 🙁 I once learned French but there are only a few words I still now and for Italian sounds like Spanish 😂 8y
Faibka @Tsubame wow! So many languages, that's so impressive! I'm fluent only in English and Spanish with French trailing far far behind... My husband is fluent in German but has not taught me yet. I know next to nothing in Japanese 😭 8y
Faibka @Tsubame sent you an email! 😁 please let me know if you received it! 8y
Tsubame @Faibka Did you get my reply? :) 8y
Faibka @Tsubame yes I did!! I sent another reply 😆 8y

The art world can be intimidating, especially for people like me who want to learn, but know almost nothing. This book was an amazing introduction. It's a friendly, non-judgmental, accessible read with tons of pictures. A nice survey of mostly western art. A must read for novices.
