Cry of the Kalahari
Cry of the Kalahari | Mark Owens, Delia Owens
This is the story of the Owens' travel and life in the Kalahari Desert. Here they met and studied unique animals and were confronted with danger from drought, fire, storms, and the animals they loved. This best-selling book is for both travelers and animal lovers.

This was my #FoodAndLit pick for #Botswana

It was interesting to read about Mark and Delia‘s experiences living in the Kalahari desert and the relationships they made with the animals living there.
Even as a reader you become invested in the livelihood of the animals.

What amazing research Mark and Delia have done and what astounding lives they‘ve lived. Their passion both for research and wildlife far transcends the harsh conditions they endured to be part of the Kalahari environment: drought, extreme temperatures, fire, storms, an extreme lack of resources for 7 years. The reader can see that it was worth every second for them. The bonds they develop with the animals of the Kalahari are as strong as family.

In 1974, Mark and Delia Owens arrived in #Botswana with $6000 and two backpacks, hoping to earn grant money along the way to continue their research on Kalahari carnivores. They ended up staying 7 years and chronicle here some of their stories. This is so good! By turns happy, sad, and harrowing, I had a great time reading this.

BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Yes! Great review Holly. She‘s written two more books (as far as I know) while living in #Zambia. I‘ve been looking for them but they are unavailable where I live unfortunately 3y
Hooked_on_books @MicheleinPhilly Yes! I learned this morning that she‘s the same one! I was rather surprised. There‘s a whole article I found that mentioned Crawdads may have been inspired by an incident in Africa. https://slate.com/culture/2019/07/delia-owens-crawdads-murder-africa.html 3y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Yes, there are 2 others and I‘m interested in looking for them at some point. This one was great, though upsetting in places. I think Africa has such incredible animals, so I knew I wanted to read about them during this challenge. This one was a good choice! 3y
BarbaraBB I want to read some books about the animals too. The chimpanzees in Threatened disappointed (not their fault 😉) as you know (!) so now I am thinking of the Owens‘ too. And I do have the fish of course, waiting for me. 3y
MicheleinPhilly Very interesting! Although I found the tone of that article to be very annoying. “She‘s not suspected of anything but because she‘s found fame and success, we‘ll act like she is responsible for her husband‘s alleged actions.” 🙄 3y
Hooked_on_books @MicheleinPhilly Naturally! Women have to be punished for success, after all. 3y

A fascinating book about a couple who studied animals in the Kalahari. This book was part love letter to African animals and part travel adventure story. I picked it because it fit the “book with a lion on the cover” prompt for #ReadYourSign but ended up liking it quite a bit.

How to endure the third consecutive weekend of snowstorms: 1) Drink plenty of hot buttered rum; 2) Immerse yourself in the Kalahari Desert (virtually); 3) Wear your warmest pair of #HarryPotter socks (not pictured).

Totally into books from past decades right now, 20th century stuff, especially the 80s. Any faves you would recommend? 📚💜

Andrew65 Are you looking for books set then, or written then? 7y
Tove_Reads Written. Wasn‘t actually even looking, but I realized that the last two massive book hauls have been filled with these books. One reason is that it‘s hard to get some of these golden oldies in English in Finland nowadays, bc they‘re not “in”. I still have many on my TBR, but there must be tons I‘ve not listed yet. Andrew65 @Tove_Reads if you are looking for some big books you could explore the woks of Wilbur Smith, a lot set in Africa. The first 10 of his Courtney series were written pre 2000 starting in 1964 and get good ratings. No 1 is (edited) 7y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I‘ve read one of his ages ago. I think I need to read another one. Still haunted by one of the chapters in the book... 7y
