Heroines of Mercy Street: The Real Nurses of the Civil War | Pamela D. Toler, PhD
6 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
A look at the lives of the real nurses depicted in the PBS show Mercy StreetHEROINES OF MERCY STREET tells the true stories of the nurses at Mansion House, the Alexandria, Virginia, mansion turned war-time hospital and setting for the new PBS drama Mercy Street. Among the Union soldiers, doctors, wounded men from both sides, freed slaves, politicians, speculators, and spies who passed through the hospital in the crossroads of the Civil War, were nurses who gave their time freely and willingly to save lives and aid the wounded. These women saw casualties on a scale Americans had never seen before, and medicine was at a turning point. HEROINES OF MERCY STREET follows the lives of women like Dorothea Dix, Mary Phinney, Anne Reading, and more before, during, and after their epic struggle in Alexandria and reveals their personal contributions to this astounding period in the advancement of medicine.

So this is a good explanation for why I've been reading a bit less the past 4 or 5 days. Addicted to this show. I'm glad Amazon Prime has made it easy to catch up in time for the season finale in a week!

JacqMac Ooo I didn't know it was on Prime. I've missed a few episodes. I'll have to go look. Thanks. 8y
Loretta @JacqMac Yep, all episodes up to Season 2 Episode 4 are up. For episode 5 you'd have to DVR it or see if it's streaming on your cable provider's website. 8y
DebinHawaii I love this show but need to catch up on a few episodes I DVR'd. 👍😀 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I just can't handle Ted Mosby not being Ted Mosby. The facial hair's not fooling anyone, Ted! 8y

#TBRtemptation post! Well, I think you get the gist of this book from what you find on this great cover 😊. The setting: Mansion House in Alexandria, Virginia. The home-turned-hospital sat at a major crossroads where all kinds of Civil War personnel & events occurred. This book focuses on Dorothea Dix, MRy Phinney, and Ann Reading. Should be a fascinating read! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

alisahar I hope this is coming back to PBS! 8y
drokka @alisahar The PBS station that broadcasts for the Buffalo/Toronto market WNED started the second season a couple of weeks ago. I hope yours has it soon. 8y
alisahar @drokka oh good to hear! Now if I only had time to watch TV.. 8y

I admit to pushing through this history so I can read another one of Rowan's books and not have all kids' books in my feed.

EricaO Nothing wrong with a ton of kids' books, my friend! But this looks super-interesting. 9y
EricaO @crankyisgood Ooooh, yes! Thanks! 9y
