FINALLY IT IS MINE (for the next 14 days, that is). I love this series, about an Earth where the world has fractured into different historical ages, and a girl sets out to find her long-lost explorer parents. It fills the Golden Compass-shaped hole in my heart quite nicely.

Pickpick

Despite enduring approximately 12 squillion interruptions while reading it, I devoured this book. The characters were genuine and complex, the format - transcripts and journals - felt organic instead of gimmicky, and both the worldbuilding and reveals were elegantly done. Best of all, when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it, and will likely keep doing so until the sequel. (Also: peek under the dust jacket, if you can.)

Waiting for track camp to finish. What kind of maniacs run in this heat?

DaphneAdair Good female protagonist? 8y
EricaO Yes! She feels genuinely teen - not perfect, or infallible. Certainly my favorite of the comic book novelizations I have read thus far, though I am BEYOND excited for Leigh Bardugo's Wonder Woman. 8y

Still no AC, so Per and I are reading a mystery set in Eugene, Oregon in winter and trying to pretend we are snowed in. Spoiler: it's not working. (At least the book is good.)

Long weekend away means lots of reading time -- finished all three, plus a reread of Good Omens.

Starting a series is always so nerve-wracking. Like meeting someone new at a party, and wondering if you'll become friends or just nod awkwardly while looking for an escape route.

Best part of reading the books my kid loves: bookish in-jokes aplenty.

DaphneAdair Thoughts on reading this with Ro? Too early? 9y
EricaO @crankyisgood It skews a little older. Maybe start with the original Percy Jackson -- The Lightning Thief -- and see what he thinks. This is the third or fourth spinoff of that series. 9y
DaphneAdair Rowan is pretty convinced he's not old enough to read it. We'll see. 9y

Third morning of hotel breakfast, last book in the series (until August). So sad, and not just because of the terrible coffee.

DaphneAdair I've been re-reading via library audiobooks - strongly recommend. 9y
