A Splendid Ruin
A Splendid Ruin: A Novel | Megan Chance
9 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
A spellbinding novel of dark family secrets and a young woman's rise and revenge set against the backdrop of the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The eve of destruction. After her mother's death, penniless May Kimble lives a lonely life until an aunt she didn't know existed summons her to San Francisco. There she's welcomed into the wealthy Sullivan family and their social circle. Initially overwhelmed by the opulence of her new life, May soon senses that dark mysteries lurk in the shadows of the Sullivan mansion. Her glamorous cousin often disappears in the night. Her aunt wanders about in a laudanum fog. And a maid keeps hinting that May is in danger. Trapped by betrayal, madness, and murder, May stands to lose everything, including her freedom, at the hands of those she trusts most. Then, on an early April morning, San Francisco comes tumbling down. Out of the smoldering ruins, May embarks on a harrowing road to reclaim what is hers. This tragic twist of fate, along with the help of an intrepid and charismatic journalist, puts vengeance within May's reach. But will she take it?

May Kimble, grieving her mother‘s death, joins her family in San Francisco in 1904. Hoping to find love & acceptance, she instead a finds secrets, drugs, & corruption. All in time for the 1905 earthquake.

An incredibly slow start, with an overly passive protagonist & I was bored up until 1/2 way through. But it was a book club book, so I persevered. & I did like May‘s growth & her journey for justice. Just wish that last 1/2 was more. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Hands down one of the best I've read in a while! What an amazing journey! I hate it had to end, but it was a beautifully written book complete with all the things that make a book worth the effort. Can't recommend highly enough!

This was a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars read. Plenty of family drama, suspense, dash of romance and historical events to pull you into the story.

Brooklyn 1901 - After May‘s mother dies she learns that she has a previously unheard of aunt in San Francisco. If you are looking for a book about family secrets, greed, jealousy, and all those fun things, this is your book. The writing was nothing less than superb. In fact, this book contains the most vivid depiction of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that I‘ve ever read. It made me truly feel what it would be like to have been there. 5-stars.

In a less generous mood I would say this is just so-so. The story is too out there and at times the main gets on your nerves. Goldie is more interesting and I would have liked to see this from her point of view instead. But it was actually kinda fun to read. It‘s for when you want to chill but want something above regency romance and reality tv.
