The Photographer: A Novel | Mary Dixie Carter

Mary Dixie Carter's The Photographer is a slyly observed, suspenseful story of envy and obsession, told in the mesmerizing, irresistible voice of a character who will make you doubt that seeing is ever believing. Delta Dawn comes from humble beginnings, but in her work as a photographer for the childrens parties of New Yorks elite she is used to moving, unnoticed, through their luxurious homes. As she observes their seemingly perfect lives, she adds to this veneer by transforming the images of their crying children, stiff hugs and unsmiling facesediting the images to make sure the parents see the party they want. The party they may later, looking at the pictures, believe really happened that way. When Delta is hired to take pictures of Natalie Straubs 11th birthday, she finds herself wishing she wasnt behind the lens. She would fit so well in the pictures with the Straub family, wouldnt she, in their gorgeous home, their elegant life? This time editing the pictures isnt enough. Delta begins by babysitting for Natalie, befriending her mother Amelia, finding chances to listen to her father Fritz; soon shes bathing in the master bathtub, drinking their expensive wine, and eyeing the beautifully finishedand currently occupiedgarden apartment in their townhouse. It seems like she can never get close enough. Until Delta discovers the one thing Amelia Straub wants most is also the perfect way for Delta to become permanently a part of the picture.

It was at this point that I realized I probably should be on #teamslaughter because of all the thrillers and mysteries I need to read for work this month. Sigh.

This is an extremely middle-of-the-road suspense novel. Good to pass the afternoon cleaning on audio, but I wouldn't spend time on it in print.

Moving on to this one. Looks like it will be a quick listen. At least compared to Dune. 😆

The first 90% of the book is extremely boring. If it weren't for the short chapters, I definitely would have bailed. However, the last two chapters save it from being a complete bust. The conclusion is anticlamatic though. Meh. 🙁

People like Delta exist and while they might not go to the same extremes, they are dangerous. In the safety of a novel, however, I find exploring their minds to be fascinating. While this may not work for those who are seeking a propulsive thriller, I thought it was fantastic and I can‘t wait to see what Mary Dixie Carter writes in the future!

When it comes to psychological thrillers, this book had potential but in the end it felt repetitive of others in this genre.

I did feel unsettled with Delta's relationship with the Straub's, which kept me intrigued enough to keep reading this one. There were some chilling encounters that I really liked, but overall it was just okay.If you want to read this one I suggest the book and not the audio. The narrator lacked emotion.

This debut novel makes for an engaging and pretty quick read! The titular photographer, Delta, becomes enamored with the Straub family while photographing their daughter‘s birthday. It‘s not long before Delta proves herself to be an unreliable narrator as she becomes more and more invested and obsessed with lives not her own. Unlikable characters make this one hard to relate to, but also hard to pull away from! A discussion starter for sure!

This was a thriller, but mostly because you just feel so unsettled most of the time. As I read, I was thinking what I am reading, yet I finished this in less than 2 hrs. Surprising and terrific ending, that pulled everything together. I cannot recommend this one enough.

This was a mindless read but in a good way. Sometimes, I don't want to have to think too hard about what I'm reading. Fritz & Amelia & even Delta are flat characters. There isn't much more to consider about them than how they are presented. Because of this, the book was a quick, easy read that I finished in an evening. ⭐⭐⭐💫 Although the plot has been done before & the mental illness trope is tired, this was too silly to take seriously.

This trope has been written before, unhinged narrator looking to integrate herself into someone else‘s life. In this case Delta, a freelance photographer, sets her sights on the Straub family. Definitely some creepy moments but lots of plot holes & illogical actions just didn‘t work for me. The use of creating art or images through photography was clever and kept me more invested. Narration was #MoreMehThanYeah #BorrowNotBuy

Megabooks I may stay on the list at the library, but I‘ll bump it if I need room. Thanks! 4y

#AudioARC #NetGalley Don‘t know much about this one, but it‘s billed as a “contemporary thriller” and that‘s my mood today.

Megabooks I‘m on the list at the library for this. Can you tag me in your review? Thanks! 💜💜 (edited) 4y

Nothing like a couple of ARCs to help pass time while the snow is steadily falling in APRIL?!

Illinois has serious commitment issues when it comes to seasons.🤦🏻‍♀️

Does anyone else have either of these on their TBR list?

Ash.on.the.line Indiana is getting some that snow as well 😭🙄 I couldn‘t believe it! 4y
