Have joined #FabulousFebruary hosted by @Andrew65
I've waited for this!

Goals? To make as much time for reading in these six days and maybe finish the tagged book.
The writing style makes it terribly hard for me to get into it. I've considered DNFing so often, but somehow I'd like to finish it. Maybe #FabulousFebruary will help.

This has been sitting on my net galley shelf so long that by the time I read it, it was in physical form 😬

To me this was perfection. It blew me away and made me cry. I love when a thriller does that.

Current read. I tried to start Nothing but blackened teeth yesterday but 40 pages in and I‘m so bored. So switching it up today.

Hope everyone is having a good Saturday 🌻

Between a pick and a so-so for me. I do love the use of fairy tales and children‘s stories to explore much darker goings-on, as well as an atmospheric read with a creepy house. A+ for these things. But it was often hard to know what was going on and follow the story.

This will be my last #NYWD review for January, though I will continue reading the list. Overall, good reads, but a bit too dark and heavy to read back to back for me.

TheLudicReader I wonder what it says about me that my list was so dark? Oh, wait, I know the answer to that. I am drawn to the darkness in literature, but not in real life. I am impressed that you kept at it. I am done for now with your list, too. For the moment at least. 3y

🎧 Meh! I thought it was supposed to be horror. Nope. I might have dozed off in the first 25%.

There was death, mystery, suspense. The ending was good but not for me as it took too long to get there.

Extra star for this little gem: “Chuck it in the fuck it bucket.”

Just because this wasn‘t for me doesn‘t mean it won‘t be for you! I‘m SO far behind in reviews!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

At the beginning I felt a little lost and had to start this audiobook over, but the fantasy elements do have a strong purpose and end up making sense. It‘s an imaginative, unique, and dark psychological mystery. The creativity and twists would be perfect for a compelling mini-series or movie! 🎧

When Cat‘s identical twin sister El goes missing, Cat returns to her childhood home in Edinburgh. She and El haven‘t seen each other or spoken in twelve years, and being back in the house she grew up in with Ross, her sister‘s husband and their childhood friend, stirs up a lot of old memories. This is a creepy, gothic, puzzle of a book about repressed memory, love and the bonds of family. It‘s a fantastic debut.

I know this book has received some criticism. However, I personally loved it. The magical realism created a unique and memorable atmosphere. The prose is sharp and drenched with detail, and the ending is solid. Overall, a great thriller.

SilversReviews I didn‘t really like this book…how is it for you? 3y
keithlafo @SilversReviews I‘ve heard mixed stuff about it. I like the premise and so far (about 100 pages in) I‘m enjoying it. Great prose. Curious to see where it goes. 3y

This was a well done psych thriller debut! It was a little too far into fantasy land for me at times, but those parts were definitely needed and tied the book together well. Lots of twists too!

Wow this left me annoyed. The audio wasn‘t my favorite, and this drifted off into fantasy, enough so that I had no clue what was even happening, enough times that I almost just gave up. The second half kind of put things back together, but very literally not until the last hour.

Your twin sister that you haven‘t seen in 20 years is missing?

Cat couldn't believe it, but she headed to Scotland to the family home even though she didn't want to.

It took time to connect with the story, but it will have you wondering just what is going on so you will keep reading.

The writing is very descriptive with a creative story line but a little too out there for me. 3/5

I‘ve been looking forward to this one since I first heard of it- estranged identical twins with a tragic and secret past?? It‘s an engaging read as it blends together not only the mystery of Ellice‘s disappearance but also the memories & imaginative childhood games that were their survival tactics to navigate their household. Some parts of the plot are easier to see coming than others but it altogether works very well- a unique & compelling read!

This was an interesting and twist filled story. It takes you on a real journey that leads you one way than spins on its axis and takes you another way. I figured out some of the plot along the way but certain bits caught me unawares. The plot is steady and builds to a cleverly written ending. This was much creepier than I thought it would be and its been a long time since a book put me on edge like that. #Netgalley 4*

This is such an unusual and strange story but gripping nevertheless. It‘s‘s quite a disturbing read as well as cleverly written and planned out. The fantasy world of Mirrorland is very bizarre and at first I couldn‘t work out what was real and what wasn‘t. It has a very complex plot, quite the brain sizzler! The ending could be a seen as a little convenient and obvious, but I liked it as it ends on a note of hope. #Pigeonhole

When her twin sister El disappears, Cat leaves LA to return to Edinburgh and Mirrorland, the imaginary place the twins played in at her childhood home. The story is full of twists (some I guessed, some I didn't) and the writing is sharp. The mystery kept me engaged, but I did not really connect with the characters and sometimes the story drags a bit. A mixed bag for me.

[I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher.]

I honestly almost gave up on this book several times. I was so confused on what was real and what was the make-believe world. Pirates? Not really my thing, but ok. The second half was better and made things a little clearer regarding what happened during the twins' childhood and why Mirrorland existed. Overall, not a very satisfying read, but thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity.

I‘ve just started Mirrorland. Has someone already read it? I know that its publication date is in April, I‘ve got an ARC from Netgalley. There were lots of marketing campaigns about the book, it even has its own IG page 🤯
I‘m around 20% and have no clue what‘s going on! Does it become better? I‘m struggling to get involved with the plot. 😐

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. I read until chapter 10 and could not get into this book. So I gave up.
