This Sweet Sickness. Patricia Highsmith
This Sweet Sickness. Patricia Highsmith | Patricia Highsmith
David Kelsey has an invincible conviction that life is going to work out just as he has planned it. Even though his one true love, the brilliant, beautiful Annabelle, has married another man, that can't possibly be the end of their relationship, can it? They can certainly still be friends. And even though she is pregnant with her husband Gerald's baby, that surely doesn't mean she won't one day get back together with David, does it? David is sure she'll take him back very soon, and, under an alias, is setting up a wonderful home for the two of them in a town close by. And everything is just about going to plan is until things take a murderous turn, leaving David a desperate man on the run.

My current read and it‘s very good so far!

Patricia Highsmith is a master at the “self-deluded” creepy stalker character. 😬

willaful If that's your bag, The Collector is about as creepy as it gets... 2y
LeahBergen @willaful Yes! I loved that one. 👍 2y
Cathythoughts This one is so good 👌🏻 Enjoy! 2y

AmyG Ha..yes she is! 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I remember you really enjoying this one when you read it! 👏 2y
LeahBergen @AmyG Like Mr. Ripley, for instance. 😆 2y
Aimeesue Are there snails in this one? High smith really had a thing for snails. 🐌 2y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue I‘m almost at the end and there aren‘t any snails yet! She sure loved her snails. 😆 I think the last one I read of hers that had snails was Deep Water? 🤔 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen They show up in some of her short stories. Some Not Very Pleasant short stories. Eek. 2y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue I‘ll keep that in mind as I have a big book of her short stories waiting for me. I always loved the bit about her taking her snails with her in her handbag to parties. 😆 2y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen The stories were well done - clearly they made an impression! 😂 2y
Rissreads I LOVED this book! ♥️ 2y

David, the protagonist of this novel that almost reads like a psychological case study,is a talented scientist who is obsessed with an ex-girlfriend,Annabelle,now married. He is convinced she loves him too and tries to win her back with gifts, phone calls, letters and visits and ignores her rejections.David chooses a fantasy world and lives a double life that leads to death and his demise.Highsmith dives deep into the mind of her protagonist.Creepy.

Cathythoughts Great review. I loved this one. Must see how many of hers I have left. 👍🏻♥️ 2y
Anna40 Thanks @Cathythoughts ! I love her writing. Highsmith is brilliant. I‘m reading Talented Mr. Ripley now. Any others you‘ve read and would recommend? 2y
Cathythoughts I loved these two , but you can‘t go wrong. She‘s all good 👍🏻😁 2y

I loved this psychological drama. MC , David Kelsey is seriously stuggling with his grasp on reality. Bizarre, yet written in such a believable way , because it is believable, yet we rarely come upon these characters in real life. Is a deeply traumatised person capable of anything ? Obsession is a real draw for some people. How far they may take it is frightening. Subtle humour too. I‘ll be savouring the P Highsmith‘s books I have left.

Tamra I think I may have only read one of her novels - obviously I need to check out more! 2y
squirrelbrain You‘re loving this author, aren‘t you?! 2y
Cathythoughts @Tamra it‘s fairly crazy stuff .. but I love it 😬. I‘m not a big fan of the who done it. I love the why done its. 2y

Bookwomble Mrs Bookwomble has this from the '80s, which I've been meaning to read since then! Your review might be the push I need to get to it this year (maybe 😏). 2y
LeahBergen You‘re making me want to move this up to the top of my TBR pile! 👍 2y
batsy Great review, Cathy. Love a good writer who delves deep into the whydunnit. I really need to be reading more Highsmith! 2y
Cathythoughts @Bookwomble I know the feeling ! R 2y
Cathythoughts @Bookwomble I know the feeling ! Too many good books out there. But , I‘ll give you a push alright 😄.. it‘s very good. 👍🏻 2y
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I‘ll be excited to hear your thoughts whenever you may get there. Nice to see you ♥️ 2y
Cathythoughts @batsy It‘s a good one. Apparently it‘s her early ‘work ‘ for Ridley. I wish I liked the who done it‘s more … but I don‘t … that could change though 🤞🏻 there are so many recommended ones on Litsy. 2y

Well obviously I loved this one since it took me 3 sittings and about 2 days to finish haha.
I could definitely see similarities to The Talented Mr Ripley, which I also loved! Highsmith really has a way of showing you the twisted workings of a twisted mind.

Apparently it's my five year litsy anniversary!!!
Yesterday I started another Highsmith audio and made a decent beginning on this Ursula Villainous puzzle. Since it's very and rainy today I'll probably just continue.

I‘m down with a nasty cold & this is the breakfast tray my sweet man put together for me 💫
Needless to say

LauraBeth Hope you feel better! I had a really bad cold for a couple of weeks that made me feel bad enough that I needed rest, but didn‘t make me feel bad enough to not read 😀. I didn‘t mind it, truthfully! 7y
Cortg Ugh! Fell better! I have one that is on the verge of taking over but I keep fighting it. 7y
Godmotherx5 I was talking to a pharmacist yesterday & nasty stuff is circulating. Rest and hydrate. 7y
CoffeeAndABook @sarah83 @Cinfhen @LauraBeth @Cortg @Godmotherx5 Thanks 🙏 you all!! My husband left for work now & it‘s not quite so pleasurable anymore... but so far my books are keeping me good & loyal company... 📚 🕯 💓 7y
CoffeeAndABook @tricours No, it really isn‘t! Especially colds are restful & cozy, aren‘t they. If they don‘t drag on forever and your eyes don‘t get too tired... Hope you have a great Sunday!!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ 7y
Donna_sBookMinute Awwww. Feel better soon. Maybe hubby will make you some chicken soup later. Just the smell wafting through the house will help you. 7y
CoffeeAndABook @LauraBeth That sounds ideal 👌🏼 Isn‘t it weird how hard it is to just rest properly when we don‘t have a legitimization like a cold? Ah well, whatever - I‘m taking it 😊 7y
ElishaLovesBooks Feel better soon and enjoy your reading!! 7y
CoffeeAndABook @Donna_sBookMinute Yes 👏🏻 I‘d love that! Sadly, he just had to leave for work but I might make myself the instant version - still good 😋🍜 Thank you for the inspiration 💫 7y

Keeping with my current thing about this author , this was my first read of anything like this by her. (I have read her lesbian novel The Price of Salt which she first published under a pseudonym. )
Very interesting. First published in 1960. Insight into an obsessive, odd person.. Certainly kept me reading . A very different psychological thriller. @MrsMalaprop

Appropriate title for me today, as I'm still dealing with the pain of pneumonia. I'm so thankful to have access to Hoopla, because it's feeding my new Patricia Highsmith audiobook addiction.

This was the perfect first book for any year. Gripping. Quirky. Chilling. Sinister. I do love it when Patricia Highsmith writes about her 'psychopathic-heroes' and David is one of her finest. It's uncomfortable and odd, just like him. I thought it was really great. I love how she slowly draws you in and then forcefully grabs you and won't let go.

vivastory I'm used to seeing you on YouTube. It's nice to see your posts on Litsy. 8y

LeahBergen Ooo! I loved the Ripley books. I'm going to need this one. 👍🏼 8y
SavidgeReads @LeahBergen I also loved Deep Water. I've never read the Ripley books. 8y
LeahBergen @SavidgeReads He's another one of her great "psychopathic heroes". I'll hunt down Deep Water, too. Thanks! 8y
