Deep Water
Deep Water: A Virago Modern Classic | Patricia Highsmith
'If I really don't like somebody, I kill him . . . You remember Malcolm McRae, don't you?' Melinda Van Allen is beautiful, headstrong and sexy. Unfortunately for Vic Van Allen, she is his wife. Their love has soured, and Melinda takes pleasure in flaunting her many affairs to her husband. When one of her lovers is murdered, Vic hints to her latest conquest that he was responsible. As rumours spread about Vic's vicious streak, fiction and reality start to converge. It's only a matter of time before Vic really does have blood on his hands.

The writing is definitely beautiful but I didn't understand why two thirds of the book is used to build the portrait of Vic, a perfectly calculated, close to psychopath character who knows his wife inside out and senses her each and every move and feelings, to just break him at the end. It seems he resisted the pressure for ten years and then he just couldn't anymore...

Cathythoughts I have this one. I really like her as an author 2y
IuliaC @Cathythoughts I liked her writing and the way she treated the subject given that the book was published in 1957. I'd like to also read one of her "Ripliad" novels. 2y

So creepy. She was such a good writer. But her characters make my skin crawl a bit.

A tale of a twisted and loveless marriage..full of dread and suspense that kept me engaged. The tension slowly builds and the horror is not the murder itself but the chilling mind of the killer. Patricia Highsmith likes to explore the darker side of human nature in her novels and this one has a sociopath who is sinister yet has my sympathies. Thank you for sending this to me, Cathy. I really enjoyed it! @Cathythoughts

Cathythoughts Great review! Your welcome & I‘m so glad you liked it 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 3y

Rosé and a classic 1957 suspense novel.

Vic‘s marriage is troubled and his wife is flaunting her affairs. When one of her lovers is found dead, Vic brags that he might be responsible.

I loved this author‘s Ripley series and this one is starting out great!

This lesser known Highsmith is amazing! Full of slow building dramatic tension and the requisite sympathetic bad guy. #nightreads #saturdaynightbooks #oldschool

Patricia Highsmith is the Queen of Suspense. She is a masterful writer who managed to get me to root for the psychopathic killer. This book also has one if the best sex scene that I have read in a long time....between two snails. Excellent book. 🐌❤️🐌😉

Lizpixie I‘ve also got this Virago Modern Classics edition of this book on the way. They‘re such beautiful editions💚💙 6y
Wilkie @Cinfhen some how I think this will be the only post in Litsy history to feature #snailsex ! 6y

#MarchIntoOz Day 20: My FB memory has been exploding with photos of my trip to Maldives, where I have been, two years back to celebrate my 40th birthday. First image that came to mind with the #DeepWater prompt. It took an airplane ride, a taxi, a boat, another cab, and a longer boat ride before we arrived at Mahibadhoo Island where we spent seven glorious days. Totally unforgettable.

Cinfhen Stunning!!! Was just discussing this glorious spot with @KarenUK 😎no shoes allowed 🙌🏻 7y

I'm a huge fan of Patricia Highsmith so was expecting something good but I absolutely loved this chilling, complex portrayal of a disturbed and dangerous man. As with many of her stories the tension builds not so much over what he might do but whether he will get away with it.
