I loved this chance to get more of Simon's backstory and learn about Bess's mother. This novella does a great job of highlighting voices of different characters from the Bess Crawford series while depicting events from when Bess was a child.

A short story in the Bess Crawford series, this traces her childhood spent in India with her father‘s regiment. But more importantly we learn more backstory of the mysterious Simon Brandon, her longtime friend. We see what shaped him from an angry young teenager escaping his family life for the military to a loved and trusted “family member” of the Crawfords. This follows a harrowing episode in which he is accused of crimes he did not commit 🔻

robinb and sentenced to die. I found this poignant and enlightening (albeit too short 😊) and was very glad to have a front row seat in viewing how the tight friendship bonds were originally forged. Well done. 4.25/5⭐️ #coverlove (edited) 4y

A short story from the world of Bess Crawford, a series that I've become quite fond of over the past few years. In here we get to learn more about the back story that brought Simon Brandon into her life. This short story was a quick read it was nice to learn more about Simon and it'll be interesting to apply this new background knowledge to future books.
