Eternal | Lisa Scottoline
#1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline offers a sweeping and shattering epic of historical fiction fueled by shocking true events, the tale of a love triangle that unfolds in the heart of Rome...in the creeping shadow of fascism. What war destroys, only love can heal. Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro grow up as the best of friends despite their differences. Elisabetta is a feisty beauty who dreams of becoming a novelist; Marco the brash and athletic son in a family of professional cyclists; and Sandro a Jewish mathematics prodigy, kind-hearted and thoughtful, the son of a lawyer and a doctor. Their friendship blossoms to love, with both Sandro and Marco hoping to win Elisabetta's heart. But in the autumn of 1937, all of that begins to change as Mussolini asserts his power, aligning Italy's Fascists with Hitler's Nazis and altering the very laws that govern Rome. In time, everything that the three hold dear--their families, their homes, and their connection to one another--is tested in ways they never could have imagined. As anti-Semitism takes legal root and World War II erupts, the threesome realizes that Mussolini was only the beginning. The Nazis invade Rome, and with their occupation come new atrocities against the city's Jews, culminating in a final, horrific betrayal. Against this backdrop, the intertwined fates of Elisabetta, Marco, Sandro, and their families will be decided, in a heartbreaking story of both the best and the worst that the world has to offer. Unfolding over decades, Eternal is a tale of loyalty and loss, family and food, love and war--all set in one of the world's most beautiful cities at its darkest moment. This moving novel will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of readers.

I love historical fiction and this was top-notch! Set in Italy pre world war 2 and beyond, it tells a rich story of family, friends, love, loss and of course food! You would never know that this was Scottoline‘s first historical fiction book and can‘t wait to read more like it!

Deeply intense! Lisa‘s first historical fiction novel is a masterpiece! I‘m a huge fan of her work and not surprised at all that Eternal lives up to the praise. Set in Italy, between 1937 and 1943, three childhood friends, Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro are coming of age, and both young men are vying for Elisabetta‘s love. War, tragedies, food, and love.

What a wonderful historical fiction book. It covers the years 1933-1945 following 3 friends through the horrific tragedy's of those years. One boy is Italian and a fascist, one boy a Jew (but they are best friends), and one Italian girl. It's an emotional book.

I absolutely loved this book. It was my first time reading this author & it is her first in this genre. It is not a happy topic but she wrote about it in a very real but respectful way. In the first half of the book there were many Italian references and it painted a beautiful picture of Rome for me. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

marleed I was intrigued to read her step into HF and loved this book too. I like her mysteries, but my favorite books are the little books she writes with her daughter about their Italian American life - and her cherished mother, Mary. 2y

When I started this book, I could tell the history was well researched. I learned a lot about Italy during WWII. However, the author lost me at the end. An event happened that caught me off guard both in action and in how the event happened. From there, the ending just felt rushed and forced together. With a strong start, I was disappointed with how it ended.

What a story this was! I‘ve never read a WW2 historical fiction novel that takes place in Italy before. It definitely showed a different side of the war. I did get a bit aggravated at times with the fickleness of the female protagonist. You‘ll know what I mean if you‘ve read the book. I loved everything else about this book. It made me want to visit Italy!

Because there is so much WWII historical fiction out there and much sits both read and unread on my own shelves, I judge it harshly hoping each reading experience is of unique value. I was intrigued by this on knowing the author‘s love of her Italian heritage. I loved this book, Elizabett, Marco, Sandro, and their families swept me into 1938 and the anguish of their next 5 years.

146 of 2021. This story centers around friends Elisabetta, Marco, Sandro and their families during WWII. Mussolini decides to ally himself with Hitler which throws Italy into the war. As they live thru the horrors of WWII, Elisabetta must decide whom she really loves, Marco or Sandro. I really enjoyed this book. Very sad! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don‘t usually read historical fiction and I‘ve only read a few books by Lisa Scottoline but the only word I could think of when I finished was powerful. This book takes place right before the Nazis invade and follows two families and three friends over many years. I‘m so glad I read this book. It consumed me from the first page to the last. I was happy, sad, and angry so many times. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!

A must-read work of historical fiction!

In Italy, 1937, Mussolini is beginning to align with Hitler‘s Nazis, and the world is being turned upside down. It is a scary time, but at the center of it all is a love triangle.

Sandro and Marco both love Elisabetta, but who does her heart belong to? And how will this new world affect all three of them?

Eternal provides insight into family, history, and friendships.

Keep those tissues nearby!

KathyWheeler I‘m about have way through this right now. So far, it‘s really good. 3y

Engaging? Yes. Beautiful descriptions of Rome? Yes. Tragic love story? Yes? WWII everyday heroes? Yes. Plot twists to keep interest? Yes. For me? Kind of….but of a stretch of events here and there that cause this one to get an “ok, but enjoyable” rating from me.

This is one of her best books. Although she writes many amazing books, this one stole my heart. It is both a tragic and happy love story based on a historic event that actually happened. I highly recommend this book but I caution that some of the content is heavy and may offend some people

Eternal by Lisa Scottoline is a beautiful story of World War II in Italy starting with teenagers before the war and lasting decades. I love Scottoline‘s thrillers, so was curious about her writing historical fiction. Eternal is so beautiful, I am shocked it is Scottoline‘s first historical fiction novel.

Thank you G.P. Putnam‘s Sons, Penguin Random House Audio.
