Shame and longing can flow through generations, but the secrets of the heart will not be buried for ever.It is 1987 and a small Irish community is preparing for a wedding. The day before the ceremony a group of young friends, including bride and groom, drive out to the beach. There is an accident. Three survive, but three are killed. The live of the families are shattered and the rifts between them are felt throughout the small town. Connor is one of the survivors. But staying among the angry and the mourning is almost as hard as living with the shame of having been the driver. He leaves the only place he knows for another life, taking his secrets with him. Travelling first to Liverpool, then London, he makes a home - of sorts - for himself in New York. The city provides shelter and possibility for the displaced, somewhere Connor can forget his past and forge a new life. But the secrets, the unspoken longings and regrets that have come to haunt those left behind will not be silenced. And before long, Connor will have to confront his past.Graham Norton's powerful and timely novel of emigration and return demonstrates his keen understanding of the power of stigma and secrecy - with devastating results.

Enjoyed this one very much, as much as Norton‘s A Keeper. He is a wonderful storyteller!

After finishing the Ozeki, I‘m now looking for something from my shelves that is perhaps shorter and lighter. Help me decide which of these 3 I should read next? 1. Death at Greenway. 2. Woman on Fire. 3. Home Stretch. 🤔

LeahBergen Death at Greenway sounds fun. 3y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @LeahBergen yes! I thought so when I bought it! 3y

Really good. I‘ve enjoyed all three of Norton‘s novels (I think A Keeper is my favorite) and look forward to a fourth. In this one we follow the reverberations of a car crash in the lives of those involved, their families and their small Irish community.

I've got this book (a gift from lovely @Cathythoughts ) out many times over the last year, but got distracted by something else every time. I finally managed to read it & enjoyed it very much. I was surprised, though, by its serious tone. I was expecting Graham Norton to be cracking jokes! Still, a great family story and an interesting illustration of the cultural changes of the last 30 years. Thank you again Cathy😘

TrishB Lovely pic and review! I‘ve had this on my kindle for a while. 3y

Reading with this old girl. 😻

CBee Oh I love her. Little old animals are my favorite - how old is she? She‘s lovely 🥰 3y
Kimbono @CBee Thanks! I think she‘s 17. She technically belongs to a neighbor but she has lived almost exclusively in my backyard for the last 11 years. 3y

CBee @Kimbono aw! I had a kitty who lived to be that age. He was the best ♥️ 3y

If you haven‘t listened to a Graham Norton novel yet, you are missing out, indeed!
Norton sets his books in his native Ireland, and narrates them all for the audiobooks. No matter the subject matter, it is a delight to hear him tell a story. You can pick any of them and have the same great experience. Treat yourself this year to this ♥️

Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻 I enjoyed this one too 3y

Over the last while I have been binging Rupaul‘s Drag Race. Basically, if it doesn‘t involve drag queens my brain can‘t handle it. So when this was an audible deal I thought “Graham Norton, the drag race judge?” (I know he does lots of other things but…) Low and behold, it‘s that Graham Norton. I had no idea he writes fiction! I was very impressed and I will read more. This is the first book in a very long time that I couldn‘t put down.

Libby1 I really liked A Keeper. Graham is a gem. 3y
Prairiegirl_reading @Libby1 it‘s on my list now!! 👍🏼💜 3y
Sweettartlaura Listen to them all - he narrates them. And no matter the subject matter, it is a delight to listen to him tell a story ♥️ 3y

Why is it so difficult to pick what to read next?!?!?

Bookzombie Sometimes when I can‘t decide, I will read the first page of several and see if one grabs me. Or I leave it up to randomness and use my Spin app. Lol. 3y
Kimbono @Bookzombie I ended up picking The Last House on Needless Street. Next time I‘ll for sure try the Spin app. I had never heard of it! Thanks! 3y
JudeCC I LOVE that pillow!!! 😍
I would start with S King! I need to get a copy myself!!
3y
Kimbono @WJCintron I got the pillow from an Etsy shop called TryHardWriter. There are 3 or 4 others I have my eye on 😍 I decided to save the Stephen King book for the long weekend and really looking forward to it. Hope you get your copy soon! (edited) 3y
JudeCC @Kimbono Thanks for getting back to me!! Yay! I'll check it out!! Have a great day and weekend! 😃 3y

This was a wonderful rich story that is told over multiple decades. I found myself completely engrossed in this book, that I did not want this to end. This is a complicated families novel at it‘s core, which is a big plus for me. There are so many hidden secrets, that Norton provides that it will have you

Cathythoughts Great review! I really liked this one too 3y

First book I‘ve read by Graham Norton. I really like him & his TV show. I enjoyed his book , set mostly in Cork , also Liverpool, London , New York. The life of the MC Connor & his family is developed throughout & how he comes to terms with an early tragedy & personal secrets. I was moved to tears many times. Well done Graham Norton.
It‘s for #Booked2021 #HearandHere I was on audio ( Norton narrates 👍🏻) so , Hear ✅ and set in Cork , so Here ✅

TrishB Great review. Stacked 👍🏻 4y
