Just Ignore Him
Just Ignore Him | Alan Davies
'A simply astonishing achievement. The quality, depth, emotional power and terrifying honesty of Alan Davies's story-telling take the breath away' Stephen Fry 'This hugely affecting book is brave, insightful and, at times, funny about things it is hard to be funny about' Jo Brand The story of a life built on sand. In the rain. In this compelling memoir, comedian and actor Alan Davies recalls his boyhood with vivid insight and devastating humour. Shifting between his 1970s upbringing and his life today, Davies moves poignantly from innocence to experience to the clarity of hindsight, always with a keen sense of the absurd. From sibling dynamics, to his voiceless, misunderstood progression through school, sexuality and humiliating 'accidents', Davies inhabits his younger mind with spectacular accuracy, sharply evoking an era when Green Shield Stamps, Bob-a-Job week and Whizzer & Chips loomed large, a bus fare was 2p - and children had little power in the face of adult motivation. Here, there are often exquisitely tender recollections of the mother he lost at six years old, of a bereaved family struggling to find its way, and the kicks and confusion of adolescence. Through even the joyous and innocent memories, the pain of Davies's lifelong grief and profound betrayal is unfiltered, searing and beautifully articulated. Just Ignore Him is not only an autobiography, it is a testament to a survivor's resilience and courage.

Alan Davies is a British actor and comedian that i have watched for many years. He wrote this book in his fifties, finally unpacking the child abuse from his past. Its a hard read but also enlightening in terms of the way his abuser ensures he is isolated from any support or nurturing. Incredibly brave of him to put this out into the world and hopefully it helps others.

Jeg As hard as this was to read I really liked/loved this book. Very brave of him. 11mo
Centique @Jeg i think it was probably your review that put this on my radar! Hope youve had a good Christmas Joy 💕 11mo

Wow. Just WOW. I adore Alan Davies and this brave and absolutely brutal memoir has left me speechless. Stephen Fry had it right when he said “[it] will never leave you.” Bravo, Alan. Bravo.

EvieBee I‘m intrigued. Just visited Amazon for the Kindle book, on sale too! Thank you! 2y

I have always loved Alan Davies and his comedy style but I had no idea of the depths of sadness this funny man covers up with humour. From losing his mum at the tender age of 6 to shoplifting to make friends in a new schooli, this man has lived a relatively solitary life, despite his success.

Thank you @Jeg for loaning me this book (although I think you may have said I am free to pass it on to others 🤔). It‘s a recently released memoir by British comedian & actor Alan Davies.

This book reminded me that there is so much we don‘t know about people, the adverse childhood experiences they may have had, and their persistence and resilience despite it all. 💕🥲❤️

squirrelbrain I have this on my wish list (maybe Santa will bring it?!). I saw him recently on TV discussing it - sounds really interesting. 4y

A very new book and as a fan of the TV series Jonathon Creek and Alan Davies I just had to read. Made me see how much childhood traumas can affect adult life. I read this in 2 days and thought he was very brave writing it. At times the anger just jumped off the page at me leaving me feeling sad. If you know him you will find this an enlightening read.

As I was reading this I wondered how his brother and sister saw this time in their lives and then I came across this quote. So very true. My brother has completely different memories of events from our shared childhood.
