The Charmed Wife
The Charmed Wife: Cinderella meets Marriage Story in this beautifully written, powerful reimagining that picks up thirteen years after she and Prince Charming said I do | Olga Grushin
8 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
'The comedy is devastating in this autopsy of a marriage that dies of "happily ever after" syndrome. Seldom has such emotional realism been spied in the precincts of wild magic. This alumna of the Cinderella marriage is overwhelmed, over-enchanted, and so over it. Fall under its charms, I dare you.' - Gregory Maguire, author of international phenomenon Wicked Cinderella wants her prince charming dead. Thirteen and a half years ago, their marriage was meant to be the conclusion to her story, the fairy tale ending she deserved after years of servitude and sorrow. Yet after playing the role of dutiful wife, she finds herself left with an indifferent husband, two children she rarely sees, and a life that has not turned out as expected. Faced with limited options, Cinderella seeks out a witch known for her magnificent curses and reputation for helping spurned women. With her husband's life hanging in the balance, and her own reality crumbling along with it, Cinderella quickly finds herself re-evaluating the fairy tale life she's been led to believe in. As her reckoning begins, her tale treads the line between magic and reality, expanding into a rich tapestry that exquisitely combines the worlds of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault with contemporary Manhattan, and revealing the uneasy truths hidden in the stories we love. Endlessly surprising and wildly inventive, THE CHARMED WIFE twists time and place, fantasy and reality, to conjure a world unlike any other, one that questions everything we think we know about romance, marriage, and the very nature of storytelling.

Good. Shows the aftermath of the Cinderella story. Enjoyable but sometimes I felt like the story was drifting so it made it hard to read. Could have done without the side story of the mice as that sidetracked me as well. Full of twists and turns.

In this #CinderellaRetelling, the focus lies on after the happily-ever-after. It‘s been 13 years since she‘s said, “I do.” And Cinderella no longer finds her prince very charming at all… in fact, she wants him dead. As the past trickles out, this fairy tale shifts into something a bit less magical. Engaging and unique, this reminded me a bit of Sheri S. Tepper‘s BEAUTY and a touch of Catherynne M. Valente‘s novellas! A sure discussion starter!

Reggie Oooh stacked because I loved this author‘s book 40 Rooms. 2y

This is a really soft pick for me. Parts of it are really very good. But the rest is sort of boring. There is an entire sub plot with mice that's awesome. And she picks fairy tales from different (European) sources and integrates them into the story in an interesting way. But in the middle of the book I was like "how is this only the middle?" Which is never a great sign.

It‘s a bit topsy turvy and you definitely need to to focus while reading, but a fun take on fairytales.

Well, I said I wanted another dark, interesting book written by a woman. Cinderella-disillusioned-by-marriage might just to fit the bill, especially if this is anything to go by!
