Arnault Du Tihl learned and remembered every aspect of the missing Martin Guerre and lived as him for 3 yrs, having two children with his wife before he found himself accused of imposture. Then he almost won his case. Fun stuff - a 1980 history book that‘s still quite fascinating, and short. (3.5 hrs on audio, and free on audible)

This is a fantastic telling of a true tale from 16th century France of a man who abandons his family, returns 9 years later and is welcomed back by his village, but 3 years after that his family and his village claim he isn‘t actually the man who left. Davis fully interrogates the cultural context and builds a substantial image of peasant village life in this microhistory.

Last night I ticked off another autumn bucket list item - reading with an autumnal scented candle lit. Very cosy! I finished the tagged book for my masters but don‘t have a pic cause I read it on pdf - very very cool book and (sort of) medieval true crime so I‘m counting it as a team read!

I loved this dive into this early case of identity theft. I just wish Bertrande had left us her version of events!

I‘ve been fascinated by the story of Martin Guerre for years, so diving in to this today makes me happy.

I really need to get back to this...

The colors are faded, the book well-loved. Natalie Zemon Davis inspired me to write the kind of history I felt in my bones I need to write.
