Mama's Curse
Mama's Curse | T M Morris
9 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
Mama was born in 1939 at the end of the Great Depression. She became pregnant at age seventeen, married her Cuban-born boyfriend with who she had three children before the was 21. She left her husband when the kids were very young, which made life very hard. As the two boys got older, they turned to drugs and alcohol, whereas daughter Tia listened to Mama and went to college; and later joined the infamous Los Angeles Police Department where she promoted up through the ranks./p> This is Tia's story about the mother-daughter bond-and the horrible disease-the two women shared. Tia calls it "Mama's curse." Mama was diagnosed with breast cancer, just as Tia began her career as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1981. As Tia rose through the ranks at work, she cared for her mother while raising her two daughters, with the support of her husband. The horrors she witnessed on the streets of LA, such as gang violence, drug abuse, and untreated mental illness, had her questioning her own generational curses, as she encountered some those woes at home with her siblings. Then the unthinkable happened. Or maybe it was destiny; like Mama, Tia was diagnosed with breast cancer. Tia's story is filled with tragedy and triumph. She learns from life's hardest lessons as she fights to manage the societal woes that adversely affect her life. She comes to the conclusion that Mama's curse, was a blessing.

My aunt's interview on CNN is on right now as part of the After OJ: The Fuhrman Tapes. She retired a Captain in the Los Angeles Police Department and worked personally with Mark Fuhrman and had to deal with his bigotry, racism and sexism! She mentions this experience in her book (though she doesnt reveal his real name). This interview is very revealing as are these tapes!

LauraJ She probably worked with my friend Spencer. LAPD is a tough gig, especially for a woman. She must be one helluva strong lady! 7y

I'm choosing a #memorablememoir that is really personal to me. My aunt released her memoir a few months back and it was so well done. There were so many things I didn't know about her life, her struggle, her barriers. She is an African-American woman that rose through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department, a breast cancer survivor, a wife, a mother and so much more. I love her. #octophotochallenge #booktober

I-read-and-eat She sounds like a very special woman. 💛 8y

Pickpick

This was a well done memoir depicting the journey not just one woman but an entire family. A wife, a mother, a police officer, a cancer survivor, a friend. She speaks on all the different aspects of her life and I found myself easily lost in the pages. Filled with humor, frustration, anger, love and understanding this is a memoir that many people can relate to. I enjoyed it.

SusanInTiburon Thanks for posting about it! It sounds great. 8y

Geek moment: That's me!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 There is something so unreal about reading about the life of someone you know and love, that has been an aunt, mentor and friend to you for as long as you can remember. Not to mention the fact that this is pretty damn good! I'm so proud!

BookishFeminist That's so cool! ❤️ It sounds like a super fascinating book, too! 8y
TheNextBook So far it is really good. It's interesting for me to see all these things that were happening when I was a little kid when all I wanted to was go to her house and spend time with my cousins! 8y
