Really enjoyed this quiet book about a young woman‘s unexpected adventure working on one of Billy Wilder‘s last films and her personal growth during that period, offset by Wilder‘s realization that his star is fading. Lovely and meditative.
Love Jonathan Coe‘s books this was a really charming interesting read perfect weekend read for me.
30/22 I read this book for my bookclub in record time (less than 3 days) and yes that was because I had to (I like to cut things fine!) but luckily I also found this to be a very easy, fast and enjoyable read. Packed with a lot of content in a small package and glowing with the pink, orange haze of an august afternoon I think it‘s a great summer read and also worked very well for our book club 3.75⭐️
I should be at home cleaning but I have to read 60 pages a day if I‘m going to get this book finished in time for bookclub so a cafe without distractions instead it is 😊 So far I am finding in a very enjoyable (and luckily quite fast paced) read, perfect for summer.

This was the first book I read in 2021 and my favourite for January. It's a glimpse of the dying days of the golden years of Hollywood and a bit of a coming of age story too.

#99ponkindle I really enjoyed this one and definitely worth this!
Carolyn, thank you so much for this wonderful package! I remember stacking this book after your good review. Love the Australian products with artwork by aboriginal artists, the bookmarks, everything, and mostly your sweet & thoughtful card. Thank you! ❤️🥰
I really enjoyed this quick evenings read. My daughter said who‘s Mr Wilder...even after I said ‘Some like it Hot‘ she shrugged her shoulders. Even I‘ve seen that film!
The last book I read in February! This is a short book but very enjoyable. And since travelling is out, it takes you to Greece, Munich, Paris and London. Calista meets by chance Billy Wilder in LA, which leads him to contacting her when he goes to make a movie in Greece. She then stays for the whole making of the movie. It is also present day and Calista is almost trying to write music about her time with Mr Wilder and reminisce about that time.
Wow. I just loved this. Echoes of Beautiful Ruins, but this one touched me more. Coe paints an affectionate portrait of director Billy Wilder and his long time collaborator Iz Diamond in the twilight of their careers. I particularly enjoyed the movie script recounting of Wilder's escape from Nazi Germany and his return to Europe after the war. My first novel of 2021 is sure to be amongst my favourites for the year.
