House of Sleep
House of Sleep | Jonathan Coe
11 posts | 13 read | 17 to read
Like a surreal and highly caffeinated version of "The Big Chill", Coe's new novel brings together four students who first meet in college in the '80s. A decade later, they are haunted by sleep, or the lack of it, and reunite at a clinic for sleep disorders.

Pickpick

When I finished What a Carve Up! years ago I intended to read more by Coe but somehow never got to it. Why did I wait so long? It really is a great book.
Dr Dudde starts a clinic for patients with sleeping problems in the building were he used to live as a student with some others. Their shared past catches up with them and it is a wonderful story that I wanted to keep reading and that not disappointed for one minute.

Here they are, the six books I have planned to read for the third quarter of #Booked2018. Of course everything can still change, especially with prompts like #Blameitonlitsy and #Beachread!
Anyhow, I am looking forward to reading all of these!

Kalalalatja I really need to start planning for this, but I think the categories are hard! 😅 7y
Cinfhen I‘m super curious to hear about 7y
Cinfhen I think they are pretty easy @Kalalalatja which ones are causing you anxiety,? 7y

Kalalalatja @Cinfhen set in school! I can‘t think of a single book. And diverse non-fiction, but that‘s more from an bounty of choices. And I don‘t think I have a book planned for LGBTQIA+ MC either 🤔 7y
jenniferw88 @Kalalalatja most of Alan Hollingsworth will work for lgbtqia+, and there's always Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe too. For school, Harry Potter, Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. 7y
saresmoore @Kalalalatja I‘ve read at least 4 books this year that were set at a school! The Idiot by Elif Betuman, Looking for Alaska by John Green, & Indecent by Corinne Sullivan were the better ones. Of course, there‘s also The Secret History by Donna Tartt and I‘ve just started Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay which I think will end up being excellent! 7y
Cinfhen @Kalalalatja You got some great recs already, I used this one for set at school which was good (edited) 7y
Cinfhen I‘ve been wanting to read your suggestion @saresmoore 7y
Cinfhen @Kalalalatja I used this one for LGBTQIA (edited) 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I can really recommend for LGBTQIA 7y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja And for school, I liked 7y
Kalalalatja @jenniferw88 @saresmoore @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB thanks for the recommendations! Having thesis-brain makes it hard to make reading plans, so your suggestions are all really helpful 🙏 7y
batsy I'd also recomment this for set in school; fun and very readable :) 7y
BarbaraBB @batsy O wow, another Coe I haven‘t read! 7y
batsy It's a good one, @BarbaraBB ! And sorry @Kalalalatja I meant to tag you in my comment above :) 7y
Kalalalatja @batsy thanks! I‘ll have to check which ones I can get from my library 👍 7y
mhillis Great list 📚 I‘m thinking about reading Penance too 7y

A great (and typically for Jonathan Coe, complex) story of unrequited love.

In pieno sole.☀️

Inad Peccato. Buone premesse, trama interessante. Mi è scaduto un po' verso la metà, quando praticamente capisci già tutto e il finale infatti ti delude perché te l'aspettavi esattamente così ma speravi comunque in una variazione inaspettata. :/ 8y
