Perfect town. Perfect homes. Perfect families. It's enough to drive some women mad... In a tale inspired by real events, pregnant journalist Joan Harken is cautiously excited to follow her fianc back to his Minnesota hometown. After spending a childhood on the move and chasing the screams and swirls of news-rich city life, she's eager to settle down. Lilydale's motto, "Come Home Forever," couldn't be more inviting. And yet, something is off in the picture-perfect village. The friendliness borders on intrusive. Joan can't shake the feeling that every move she makes is being tracked. An archaic organization still seems to hold the town in thrall. So does the sinister secret of a little boy who vanished decades ago. And unless Joan is imagining things, a frighteningly familiar figure from her past is on watch in the shadows. Her fianc tells her she's being paranoid. He might be right. Then again, she might have moved to the deadliest small town on earth.

Highly recommend this creepy mystery about a too-perfect small town! Suspenseful drama around a cold kidnapping case leads to a killer twist. A gaslighting fiancée leaves pregnant reporter Joan off balance. She was warned to stay out of the basement, and what she finds made me more sad than scared, but it‘s another well-plotted turn in this compelling tale! #mystery #creepy #smalltowns

So the very cool Jess Lourey taught a Book on a Bag workshop at Bouchercon. Kinda intimidating for a short story writer… who is a “pantser” anyway. My characters kick any outline to the curb. Dare I try this method? Reading her award-winning thriller seems easier! I will start there… #thriller #writersread

Absolutely loved this one! Such a great story with plenty of twists and turns. Really captures the small town feel. Couldn't put it down.

🎧 An incestuous Stepford Wives meet Rosemary‘s Baby in an M. Night Shyamalan film?

Joan is a journalist in 1963. She & her mom moved frequently so when she passed away Joan only had a couple college roommates for support. She meets a boy, gets pregnant then mugged in the big city & convinced to return to her BF‘s small home town. A dark secret exists there, will she uncover it or become part of it?

Predictable but fun none-the-less.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Twainy @Reggie are you ever reading a book and thinking, this is remarkably like something else? Maybe it was the mood I was in …. LOL 3y

Highly enjoyable! Joan Harken, intrepid reporter and newly pregnant, moves to the small town of Lilydale with her boyfriend. Once there, she learns about the unsolved disappearance of a child some 20 years before and goes about investing but something about the town is off. This was fun! The tension was high right from the start, and I thought I was so clever and had things figured out but was off the mark, by a lot. Definitely a pick!

This is my April #bookspin and it was a quick, fun read set in the 1960s and concerning Joan, a young woman who moves to a small town with her boyfriend after being mugged in the big city. It is soon clear that this small town is filled with Stepford wives and controlling husbands. Not as good as Unspeakable Things, but still enjoyable. @TheAromaofBooks

A wild, crazy ride from start to finish. Great story idea, but could‘ve used more character development and moments made me nauseous to read. However, still would recommend for a different type of suspense book. Lots of Get Out vibes

What. The. Hell. I'm so mad. After thoroughly enjoying Unspeakable Things, I was really looking forward to Bloodline. When I say I couldn't predict what would happen next, I mean that in the worst way possible. Of course I couldn't! Nothing made any sense. This was ludicrous. About halfway through, it's like the author realizes that no one will be able to connect the dots BECAUSE THEY DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE ⬇️

FelinesAndFelonies (continued) so she just word vomits everything onto the page. At that point, I don't even think she's trying to weave a cohesive story. This book was garbage. I can't believe that anyone published it. I'm pissed. What a waste of trees, time, and brain-power. 4y

This book started out a little slow, the only moments that kept me going were the tidbits of the present. Even though it took a while to warm up, I still enjoyed the twists. It was an easy/quick read and I did find myself up too late so I could finish the climax.

With strong Stepford Wives vibes, this book was somewhat entertaining but far from spectacular. Nothing I haven't come across before, in better written and better paced versions. ⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #BFC21 This was my #bookspin #bookspinbingo book for January @TheAromaofBooks Also works for #LitsyAtoZ #abecedarianTBR #letterB @BookishMarginalia and for my informal #ReadingUSA2021 #Minnesota

It took me until about the halfway point to get really into this book. I had to tell myself to quit comparing it to Rosemary‘s Baby (loved!) and just go with it as its own story. Anyway, toward the end I could not put it down! It‘s definitely worth the read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

“You should never feel guilty for reading...” is what my mom said after I texted that I felt guilty for reading and not doing something productive around the house. Thanks, mom, you‘re absolutely right! (I have less than two weeks of freedom left before school starts again so I want to read as much as I can)

wanderinglynn Yay for mom! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Reading is productive. 4y
Tera0707 @wanderinglynn very true 😊 I love reading because of my mom. She‘s always been a reader too, and that‘s one thing she never said no to was books when I asked for them. 4y

This is my second novel by Jess Lourey. I look forward to more.
This book is excellent. It reminds me in many ways like a cross between The Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby. Not a demon baby at all though. Just something about the characters and setting. The way the people of Lilydale act. The way the women behave. The way the men are the big bad bosses dominating every aspect of lives.
5/5 stars.

This bool was such a page turner, i couldn't wait for all these mysteries to be solved, but once the story started to unfold it just got...weird. Nevertheless,i did enjoy it so ill say its a "pick". If you enjoy Rosemary's baby and Stepford wives you'll like this.

This is my first experience with Lourey‘s writing- and I am sure it won‘t be my last! This engaging thriller is loosely based on a true story of a missing child in a small Minnesota town. Narrator Joanie Harken is a true journalist relocated to a small town with her boyfriend and unborn child. She can‘t stop digging into the town‘s past. Despite heavy-handed foreshadowing and a predictable plot, it‘s a satisfying read from start to finish!
