So the very cool Jess Lourey taught a Book on a Bag workshop at Bouchercon. Kinda intimidating for a short story writer… who is a “pantser” anyway. My characters kick any outline to the curb. Joan is a journalist in 1963. She & her mom moved frequently so when she passed away Joan only had a couple college roommates for support. She meets a boy, gets pregnant then mugged in the big city & convinced to return to her BF‘s small home town. A dark secret exists there, will she uncover it or become part of it?
Predictable but fun none-the-less.

pickHighly enjoyable! Joan Harken, intrepid reporter and newly pregnant, moves to the small town of Lilydale with her boyfriend. Once there, she learns about the unsolved disappearance of a child some 20 years before and goes about investing but something about the town is off. This was fun! The tension was high right from the start, and I thought I was so clever and had things figured out but was off the mark, by a lot. Definitely a pick!
This picture of contentment lasted about 2 minutes 😂 I hope all are having a lovely and book filled weekend. So far Bloodline is great and looks like Jess Lourey will be an auto-buy going forward.
pickThis is my April #bookspin and it was a quick, fun read set in the 1960s and concerning Joan, a young woman who moves to a small town with her boyfriend after being mugged in the big city. It is soon clear that this small town is filled with Stepford wives and controlling husbands. Not as good as Unspeakable Things, but still enjoyable. @TheAromaofBooks
panWhat. The. Hell. I'm so mad. After thoroughly enjoying Unspeakable Things, I was really looking forward to Bloodline. When I say I couldn't predict what would happen next, I mean that in the worst way possible. Of course I couldn't! Nothing made any sense. This was ludicrous. About halfway through, it's like the author realizes that no one will be able to connect the dots BECAUSE THEY DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE ⬇️
so-soThis book started out a little slow, the only moments that kept me going were the tidbits of the present. Even though it took a while to warm up, I still enjoyed the twists. It was an easy/quick read and I did find myself up too late so I could finish the climax.
so-soWith strong Stepford Wives vibes, this book was somewhat entertaining but far from spectacular. I read Unspeakable Things and really liked it. I hope this one is as good.
pickIt took me until about the halfway point to get really into this book. I had to tell myself to quit comparing it to Rosemary‘s Baby (loved!) and just go with it as its own story. Anyway, toward the end I could not put it down! It‘s definitely worth the read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
“You should never feel guilty for reading...” is what my mom said after I texted that I felt guilty for reading and not doing something productive around the house. Thanks, mom, you‘re absolutely right! (I have less than two weeks of freedom left before school starts again so I want to read as much as I can)
This is my second novel by Jess Lourey. I look forward to more.
This book is excellent. It reminds me in many ways like a cross between The Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby. Not a demon baby at all though. Just something about the characters and setting. The way the people of Lilydale act. The way the women behave. The way the men are the big bad bosses dominating every aspect of lives.
5/5 stars.

pickThis bool was such a page turner, i couldn't wait for all these mysteries to be solved, but once the story started to unfold it just got...weird. Nevertheless,i did enjoy it so ill say its a "pick". If you enjoy Rosemary's baby and Stepford wives you'll like this.
pickThis is my first experience with Lourey‘s writing- and I am sure it won‘t be my last! This engaging thriller is loosely based on a true story of a missing child in a small Minnesota town. Narrator Joanie Harken is a true journalist relocated to a small town with her boyfriend and unborn child. She can‘t stop digging into the town‘s past. Despite heavy-handed foreshadowing and a predictable plot, it‘s a satisfying read from start to finish!
pickCreepy town, even creepier people and a great plot with surprise twists! Don't miss out on this one, releasing in January!

Next up on my staycation binge reading! I discovered Jess Lourey when I got her previous novel, Unspeakable Things, as an Amazon First Read last year, and it was one of the best books I read in 2019. Bloodline was released today as an Amazon First Read and i had to grab it immediately!
