The Thunder of Giants
The Thunder of Giants: A Novel | Joel Fishbane
9 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
The year is 1937 and Andorra Kelsey 7'11 and just over 320 pounds is on her way to Hollywood to become a star. Hoping to escape both poverty and the ghost of her dead husband, she accepts an offer from the wily Rutherford Simone to star in a movie about the life of Anna Swan, the Nova Scotia giantess who toured the world in the 19th century.Told in parallel, Anna Swan's story unfurls. While Andorra is seen as a disgrace by an embarrassed family, Anna Swan is quickly celebrated for her unique size. Drawn to New York, Anna becomes a famed attraction at P.T. Barnum's American Museum even as she falls in love with Gavin Clarke, a veteran of the Civil War. Quickly disenchanted with a life of fame, Anna struggles to prove to Gavin and the world - that she is more than the sum of her measurements. Both meticulously researched and resounding with the force of myth, Joel Fishbane's The Thunder of Giants blends fact and fiction in a sweeping narrative that spans nearly a hundred years. Against the backdrop of epic events, two extraordinary women become reluctant celebrities in the hopes of surviving a world too small to contain them.

Finally, finally finished this one... overall, it‘s not the worst book I‘ve ever read, but IMHO, it is very boring with a weak plot. The character are mostly uninteresting, and at times the time skips feel like a crutch. However, the last 60 pages actually make the book worth reading and has some really beautiful lines and imagery. I give it 🌟🌟.. the ending is its saving grace... #pbc #genrebending @Wife

rjsthumbelina I was honestly having trouble with it in the print, but I started listening to it on audio while reading, and it totally changed my experience! It brought the characters to life for me. I didn't think the plot was super strong either - the only storyline I liked was the one about being in the movies 6y

I finished last month, but mailing today. So, Becky, you will have it soon. I don‘t want to give any spoilers, but just say I‘m happy to have read it. Only a so-so because it had a couple slow spots. 3/5 ⭐️s
I‘m nervous about a couple of my reads coming from the group, but I‘m brave and determined. 😬
Background is the puzzle my grandson and I worked on last night.

TheRomantiCate I know the thought.. 😝 6y

A somewhat disappointing so-so read. Confusing timeline, too many twists and lack of finesse in storytelling making this such a frustrating read. However, I appreciate that one of the main characters was based on the true historical character Anna Swan.

Pickpick

Snow this afternoon meant I got to finish this. The historical story of Anna Swan is interwoven with the fictional story of Andorra Kelsey. It is beautifully written with strong well formed characters. I enjoyed it.
