Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain | Oliver Sacks
What goes on in human beings when they make or listen to music? What is it about music, what gives it such peculiar power over us, power delectable and beneficent for the most part, but also capable of uncontrollable and sometimes destructive force? Music has no concepts, it lacks images; it has no power of representation, it has no relation to the world. And yet it is evident in all of uswe tap our feet, we keep time, hum, sing, conduct music, mirror the melodic contours and feelings of what we hear in our movements and expressions. In this book, Oliver Sacks explores the power music wields over usa power that sometimes we control and at other times dont. He explores, in his inimitable fashion, how it can provide access to otherwise unreachable emotional states, how it can revivify neurological avenues that have been frozen, evoke memories of earlier, lost events or states or bring those with neurological disorders back to a time when the world was much richer. This is a book that explores, like no other, the myriad dimensions of our experience of and with music. From the Hardcover edition.

I just found out that Linkin Park is dropping a new music video on Friday on their YouTube channel. It looks like it‘s another song off of their new album coming out in November.

For #tuesdaytunes, I spent my afternoon watching the MTV VMAs. I enjoyed it. I had it recorded on Fubo TV but it cut off towards the end before the last award was given out so I searched for it and streamed the last few minutes of it and I was able to finish watching it. I like watching the VMAs. It‘s usually a 3 hour show.

Yay! I ordered Taylor Bradshaw‘s new live album because I got early bird access to it. I‘m so excited. Now, I have a new album and a new concert film to look forward to as well as a bonus track. All I have to do is download and stream it. I‘ll be listening when I get a chance to. I ordered the deluxe edition of the album because it comes with more stuff. Taylor Bradshaw is an independent folk musician that I‘m supporting.

I‘m sharing this merch that I ordered from Taylor Bradshaw, an independent folk musician from NYC. He just made some new necklaces. One is a wildflower necklace with real wildflowers and the other is a Birch Leaf necklace made with real leaves. He hasn‘t been signed to a record label yet. I‘ve been supporting him for a while after I saw him advertising his music on Facebook and I feel really good about it.

#tuesdaytunes

kelli7990 He has a Facebook page and a YouTube channel. I just really like his vibe. I would like to support more independent musicians and help make their dreams come true but there‘s only so many hours in the day to listen to music and I might not like all of the music that I see being advertised on Facebook so I‘m being very selective about who I support. It‘s important to me that I genuinely like the musicians I‘m supporting. 2mo
TieDyeDude Very cool. It\'s nice when you can direct support an artist that is important to you. That\'s some unique merch, too! 1mo

I normally listen to instrumental music when reading. I have created a few playlists for specific books. One where the MC was a musician & each chapter title was a song. And one series that features a fictional band that discuss a lot of music. But I have more playlists for writing than reading.

I always have music playing & listen to a bit of everything. But my faves are grunge, punk, 90s rock, & show tunes.

TieDyeDude Thanks for sharing. I feel like if I have something to block out, I can focus better on my reading. I used to tune in the radio to whatever station, but since we don't have a stereo set up so everything is streaming, I have to pick something, which is usually classical. 2mo

I have something else to share for #tuesdaytunes. I just saw this article about Linkin Park. It says that Sum 41 broke up last year. I didn‘t even know they were still making music.

https://metaladdicts.com/is-sum-41s-deryck-whibley-the-new-linkin-park-singer-fa...

kelli7990 I mean, I like Sum 41 but Deryck doesn‘t have the same voice as Chester. A lot of bands replace singers and Linkin Park wouldn‘t be any different. I would be open to hearing how new music from them might sound with a new singer. We‘ll just have to see what happens. 2mo
TieDyeDude That'll be an interesting change. I wasn't aware that Sum 41 broke up. I wonder if Linkin Park is planning new music, or if this is just so they can tour again. 2mo

Since I‘m talking about music today, I was wondering last night if Slipknot ever made any concert films because I‘ve listened to the live albums that they‘ve released and I found 2 concert films that they did a long time ago on Amazon Prime Video. Yay! I‘m looking forward to watching these. I‘ve listened to the live albums so I know how they sound live but watching them will be different.

#tuesdaytunes

TieDyeDude That's cool. I don't see a lot of concert films these days. I can't remember the last one I watched before Elton John's farewell tour on Disney+ (edited) 2mo

I saw this template on my Instagram stories and decided to fill it out and it works for today since it‘s all about music. This was fun. My background I used is a Cross stitch image I did on my Cross Stitch app. The image definitely looks like it could be on a blanket or something.

#tuesdaytunes

TieDyeDude Billy Gilman, wow! Haven't heard that name in a long time 😅

I got to see Linkin Park with Jay-Z at the Live 8 show in Philadelphia. It was epic!

I filled this out as well. I think I'll post it for #tuesdaytunes next week!

Got 90 out of 100 this week. Possibly even higher - there are a couple songs I'm guessing I've heard but just don't recognize the names.

I have no idea how to pick my three favorites this time around, so I'll just say three that I've listened to most recently:

1. Ever Fallen in Love - The Buzzcocks
2. Master of Puppets - Metallica
3. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones

This week‘s list is “The 500 Greatest Songs of all Time” 400-301 - all that classic and yacht rock is paying off lol! I may be the only person born in the 70‘s who had The Zombies in my Spotify‘s top 5 of the year for 2023. I love music and had a pretend DJ set up as a kid, I lived in the country and had to make my own fun 🎵 ❤️

I cleaned my bedroom yesterday from 1-3 PM. I downloaded the iHeartRadio app to my TV and found this radio station that I haven‘t listened to in a long time. I wanted some music on while I was cleaning. I had to move things out of my room in order to clean. The worst part about cleaning my room is moving stuff. It was dusty. I still haven‘t finished putting my room back together but at least it‘s clean now.

My favorite radio station is my local radio station. It‘s 94.5 The Buzz in Houston. The song that I just listened to the last few minutes of on the website was Rx (Medicate) by Theory Of A Deadman. I like that song. I haven‘t listened to this station in a while but I know that I can ask Alexa to play the station on my Amazon Echo device. I asked her to play it before. She can play any radio station that you want.

I saw this template on Instagram and thought it would be fun to share it here. This is my favorite Linkin Park song. It‘s the first song that ever got me into Linkin Park. I heard my brother listening to them when he was a teenager and I was a little girl. I started listening to them after that. When I found out Chester (the lead singer) died, I started crying. I don‘t even listen to the music anymore because of it.

#tuesdaytunes

TieDyeDude I love that template! My younger brother was aware of them well before me. I remember finding “High voltage“ and “My December“ on Napster when they were only available as bonus tracks. And I really enjoyed the Jay-Z collab album. 6mo

2. You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi

3. Under Pressure - Queen

I was born in 1990 so I didn‘t hear any 80‘s songs until later on but the 80‘s had a lot of good songs. I couldn‘t decide what was my favorite but I like these songs.

For #tuesdaytunes, I‘m sharing this playlist I found on Spotify one day when I was at the dog park with my dog. When I go to the dog park in my neighborhood, I let my dog off the leash and let her run around in there. Then, I put my earbuds in and start walking the path while listening to music and she walks with me. I‘ve been listening to this playlist when I‘m at the dog park with my dog. I like a lot of the songs so far.

#20in4 wrap up

I read for 10h15m and finished 2 novellas. Got up to 75% in the tagged audiobook, 30% in my ebook and have only 100p left in my print book. So pretty good progress, and hopefully I'll finish all 3 of those before the end of the month.

A small #20in4 update, but mostly an excuse to show off my new #audiostitching project. New-ish, this is almost 3 weeks of work. I'll be doing it for a while but I love it so that's ok.

I'm at 4h45m for the readathon so far. Definitely won't hit 20 hours but I've got 2 novellas finished, and up to 50% in the tagged audiobook.

It‘s easy to become eagerly engaged in the mysteries and discoveries that the brain holds, especially with Sacks‘ descriptive style.

John Lee narrates the audio book with a soothing cadence, bringing a melodic rhythm to Sacks‘ words.

Outdated phrasing is sort of expected with older works and this book has terms we would no longer use. Besides that it‘s a very accessible book and highly recommended.

I've been quiet on Litsy because my beautiful sister & niece were visiting from Florida for 3 weeks. #Movember - Music: I like when there is a prompt about music in the photo challenges because listening to music is equally as important to me as reading books. I usually do the two together. I have a playlist on my iPod titled ‘Music for Reading.‘🎶 Reading penetrates to some deeper part of my brain when I‘m listening to music simultaneously. Oliver Sacks understood - music wields a power over the brain. I say music communicates with the soul.🎵

Cinfhen That‘s so interesting/ when I read I can‘t have background music....I find my concentration is broken 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Nute @Cinfhen I get that! It‘s the same for why I can‘t read and have a television on in the background. And I can‘t read in places where there are conversations like waiting rooms or on public transportation. Here‘s the deal with the music thing - it must be at low volume and only a particular type of music like classical or new age or smooth jazz...no vocals...no upbeat tempo. I really like haunting cello music while I read. Oooh...just lovely!☺️ 5y
Cinfhen Yes !!!!! to the public reading spaces and TV background/ so distracting!!! I‘ll try smooth jazz or new age. I find music is so soothing on any other circumstance 5y
