Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain | Oliver Sacks
108 posts | 53 read | 4 reading | 58 to read
What goes on in human beings when they make or listen to music? What is it about music, what gives it such peculiar power over us, power delectable and beneficent for the most part, but also capable of uncontrollable and sometimes destructive force? Music has no concepts, it lacks images; it has no power of representation, it has no relation to the world. And yet it is evident in all of uswe tap our feet, we keep time, hum, sing, conduct music, mirror the melodic contours and feelings of what we hear in our movements and expressions. In this book, Oliver Sacks explores the power music wields over usa power that sometimes we control and at other times dont. He explores, in his inimitable fashion, how it can provide access to otherwise unreachable emotional states, how it can revivify neurological avenues that have been frozen, evoke memories of earlier, lost events or states or bring those with neurological disorders back to a time when the world was much richer. This is a book that explores, like no other, the myriad dimensions of our experience of and with music. From the Hardcover edition.

Here‘s what I listened to recently.

On Hoopla, I listened to the last album that Slipknot put out. Now, I‘ve listened to all of their albums. I like their older music better.

On my Amazon Echo Dot in my room, I listened to Third Eye Blind after I got finished taking a shower one night. I like having music on when I‘m getting ready for bed too. I love my Echo Dot.

I‘m subscribed to Apple Music and this is just some of my Favorites that I added on Sunday night. I ended up with 387 songs and I still want to add more. My music taste is all over the place. I‘m stressed out because I have a lot going on at my house right now and it‘s throwing off my routine so listening to the music and favoriting the songs made me feel better. It‘s been a while since I‘ve sat down and just listened to music.

#tuesdaytunes

ShananigansReads I was once listening to my iPod in the kitchen at my old job. One of the VPs came in and asked me what I was listening to. I was too caught off guard to lie and had to admit to listening to Dick in a Box. 🙈 🙈 😂 😂 😂 3w

I‘m subscribed to Apple Music on my phone and I discovered that if you‘re subscribed to Apple Music, you can Favorite Songs and it makes a playlist of them and automatically adds them to your device without having to buy the song so I did that on Sunday night and listened to some songs I added and I added my iTunes library to Windows Media Player. I listened to 1 song by Brokencyde and some other songs on my computer.

This is the first time I did automatic writing and got titles of songs. I like music so I thought that was pretty cool but I don‘t know if this means that I‘m going to be hearing these songs again. Well, I heard 2 of the songs on TV last night so probably. I‘m still trying to process what happened.

I got this email from Taylor Bradshaw inviting me to his private discord group and here, I‘m showing my response to the email and his response. I‘m nervous about it. I‘m a very quiet person. I don‘t know if I‘m going to have anything helpful to contribute to his music project or if I‘ll be saying very much during the Zoom meetings. I don‘t know if this will be the right fit for me but I‘ll try it out and see.

Here‘s my 2024 #spotifywrapped. I didn‘t want to wait until #tuesdaytunes to post this. I liked the music I listened to during January and February the most. I got Amazon‘s Echo Pop for Christmas and I bought 1 for Christmas during a Black Friday sale for my mom, my mom‘s boyfriend and my brother so they each have their own. I need to set it up so I can try it out. It‘s smaller than the Amazon Alexa speaker and it takes up less space.

I forgot to post the music I listened to one night before bed on Spotify for #tuesdaytunes so I‘m posting it on Weds instead. I listened to the cd by Clint Black because I own the CD but I‘m gonna get rid of it because I don‘t really care for the songs on it. I like his older music better. I skipped 3 songs because I wasn‘t in the mood for them: What Might Have Been, She‘s In Love With The Boy and Watermelon Crawl.

Taylor Bradshaw released a digital discography of all of his albums available to download yesterday and I bought it. He said this in an email yesterday,”PS. Listening to those old demos last night had me cracking up—I can‘t believe I said some of those raunchy lyrics out loud 🤣”. Lol. I‘m looking forward to listening to the albums again.

He performed some of his songs and he had a Q&A portion of the livestream.

All I‘ve been listening to is Linkin Park. I found so much old concert footage on YouTube with Chester performing with the band and I‘m looking forward to watching it. I‘ve never seen them live. I‘ve only watched their Live In Texas DVD but it‘s made me want to watch their other concerts. I grew up listening to Linkin Park. I was listening to Taylor Bradshaw‘s music all afternoon yesterday. I listened to the CD I ordered from him, streamed the album and watched the concert film. I like all of his songs from the album but I think the cover song was my favorite.

I‘m sharing this merch that I ordered from Taylor Bradshaw, an independent folk musician from NYC. He just made some new necklaces. One is a wildflower necklace with real wildflowers and the other is a Birch Leaf necklace made with real leaves. He hasn‘t been signed to a record label yet. I‘ve been supporting him for a while after I saw him advertising his music on Facebook and I feel really good about it.

#tuesdaytunes

kelli7990 He has a Facebook page and a YouTube channel. I just really like his vibe. I would like to support more independent musicians and help make their dreams come true but there‘s only so many hours in the day to listen to music and I might not like all of the music that I see being advertised on Facebook so I‘m being very selective about who I support. It‘s important to me that I genuinely like the musicians I‘m supporting. 6mo

I normally listen to instrumental music when reading. I have created a few playlists for specific books. One where the MC was a musician & each chapter title was a song. And one series that features a fictional band that discuss a lot of music. But I have more playlists for writing than reading.

I always have music playing & listen to a bit of everything. But my faves are grunge, punk, 90s rock, & show tunes.

TieDyeDude Thanks for sharing. I feel like if I have something to block out, I can focus better on my reading. I used to tune in the radio to whatever station, but since we don't have a stereo set up so everything is streaming, I have to pick something, which is usually classical. 6mo

I have something else to share for #tuesdaytunes. I just saw this article about Linkin Park. It says that Sum 41 broke up last year. I didn‘t even know they were still making music.

https://metaladdicts.com/is-sum-41s-deryck-whibley-the-new-linkin-park-singer-fa...

kelli7990 I mean, I like Sum 41 but Deryck doesn‘t have the same voice as Chester. A lot of bands replace singers and Linkin Park wouldn‘t be any different. I would be open to hearing how new music from them might sound with a new singer. We‘ll just have to see what happens. 7mo

I haven't posted my results for the Rolling Stones survey in a couple of weeks, but as this is the final one I thought I'd share. I scored 90%, not too shabby. My favorite songs from this list (in no order):
*Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody“ (At position 84 this one should have def ranked higher. One of the greatest!)
*Joy Division's “Love Will Tear Us Apart“
*Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah“
*Patti Smith's “Gloria“
*Billie Holiday's “Strange Fruit“

Got 90 out of 100 this week. Possibly even higher - there are a couple songs I'm guessing I've heard but just don't recognize the names.

I have no idea how to pick my three favorites this time around, so I'll just say three that I've listened to most recently:

2. Master of Puppets - Metallica
3. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones

As I have a busy day tomorrow, I am creating my #tuesdaytunes post now. A lot of cover love right now, with Cash's version of The Beatles “In My Life“ being a perennial favorite. This is on American IV, the same album as the iconic version as “Hurt“ & I think it deserves as much attention; it is more understated but the emotions are there nonetheless & it is a fantastic cover. Secondly, is Meg Myers' cover “Running Up That Hill.“ (CONT)

vivastory Yes, really. I love the Kate Bush song, but my intro to the tune was not through Stranger Things & not through Bush's version but through Myers' cover when it was played on my local radio in 2020. For a non-cover song that I am loving at the moment: Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's collaborations, esp. their album Hawk.

youneverarrived It‘s been too long since I‘ve listened to Midlake; I used to listen to that album on repeat. Love the James Carr song too. 13mo

BarbaraBB Love your musical taste Scott 💖 13mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB Thanks, Barbara! That's a great compliment coming from someone with as wonderful tastes as you 💙 13mo
vivastory @TieDyeDude For some reason I had avoided Stevens for awhile. I had the impression that he was a hipster version of Weird Al or something, really impressed by this album though. Great idea with the hashtag! 13mo
vivastory @youneverarrived I only recently learned about Midlake & it has been delightful. Carr is great. I stumbled across him while listening to a soul music playlist on spotify & he really stood out for me. 13mo
AmyG This album and Michigan…🙌🏻❤️ 13mo

#Midwintersolace

I forgot to post this one last week 😅
What's your go-to playlist to relax to?

My taste in music is as eclectic as my reading preferences. I do enjoy a bit of Fleet Foxes, James Blake or The XX to unwind to.

I usually always play at least a couple wistful, melancholy folk music albums on Sunday nights. The sort of music that would make a perfect soundtrack to the stories of Alice Munro or the poetry of Emily Dickinson. After just playing a favorite (Vashti Bunyan's Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind) I decided to go off on a different tangent & turn it up to 11 with a favorite: the most recent Low album. RIP Mimi Parker.

Bookwomble Vashti Bunyan! 💖🎶 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble One of my favorite discoveries of the year! Have I mentioned Sybille Baier to you before? Seeing that you like Bunyan, I feel pretty confident recommending Baier. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I don't think you've mentioned Sybille - I'll try to catch them 😊 2y

CBee I love Belle and Sebastian! And is that a Debussy piece I spy? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
Twainy Same but Apple Music. I love music. ♥️ 2y
vivastory @CBee The new B&S album is one of my favorites of the year. That is indeed a Debussy work. Specifically this rendition, from Alice Sara Nott's album of Debussy Satie & Ravel *swoon*

CBee Sigh…. I adore Debussy 😍😍 2y
vivastory @CBee He's become a favorite over the past couple of years 2y
vivastory @Twainy Who do you think was your most listened to artist of the year? 2y
Jess I‘m right behind you with 21,193 minutes. Philip Glass was my most listened artist. I was surprised how much podcast listening I did this year. Great list! 2y
vivastory @Jess Love Philip Glass! I'm always surprised by who shows up as my most listened to artists of the year. I also use spotify for my podcasts. I like picking back up when I have to stop for a bit. 2y
CBee @vivastory if you haven‘t checked out any of his piano music, you must! 2y
vivastory @CBee Thanks for the recommendation! For classical, piano is easily one of my favorite instruments (closely followed by violin) 2y
CBee @vivastory sorry, I‘m a doofus - looked at the link and realized that‘s a piano music album 🤦‍♀️ 2y
Twainy @vivastory MWA hahaha … I looked at my Replay 2022 playlist when I first responded & I thought WHAT?! I listen at work lately so I listen to an Apple curated office playlist & those songs are creeping up my list! 😳 Most listened to song … according to Replay … is by Eskimo Callboy but if you add up songs … surprisingly AC/DC 🤷🏼‍♀️ probably should press SHUFFLE on my main playlist. Soon Xmas songs will prevail! 😆 2y

My local members supporter radio station is playing all 70s music this weekend. They asked listeners to submit their 5 favorite songs of the decade. An impossible task, as I'd struggle with a list of the 5 best Bowie songs of the 70s. Nevertheless, above are the ones I submitted.

BookwormAHN Fantastic choices 🧡 2y
vivastory @BookwormAHN Thanks! I'll be curious to see what makes the top 20 2y
LeahBergen I‘m loving your choices! 2y
