The Summer House
The Summer House | Lauren K. Denton

Sometimes it takes losing everything to find yourself again. Lily Bishop wakes one morning to find a good-bye note and divorce papers from her husband on the kitchen counter. Having moved to Alabama for his job only weeks before, Lily is devastated but forced to contemplate her next steps when she sees a flier at the grocery store for a hair stylist position in a local retirement community. Rose Carrigan built the small retirement village of Safe Harbor years agojust before her husband ran off with his assistant. Now she runs a tight ship, making sure the residents follow her strict rules. Rose keeps everyone at arms length, including her own family. But when Lily shows up asking for a job and a place to live, Roses cold exterior begins to thaw. Lily and Rose form an unlikely friendship, and Lilys salon soon becomes the place where residents share town gossip, as well as a few secrets of their own. Lily even finds herself drawn to Roses nephew, Rawlinsa single dad and shrimper whos had some practice at starting over, and one of the residents may be carrying a torch for Rose as well. Neither Lily nor Rose is where they expected to be, but the summer makes them both wonder if theres more to life and love than what theyve lived so far. The Summer House weaves Lauren Dentons inviting Southern charm around a womans journey to find herself.

Struggled to get into this one and found certain parts of it to be a little slow. I'm glad I stuck with it though because by the end I was really interested in what was going to happen. I do feel like the ending was rushed. Most of the book was long and didn't seem overly important. More time was spent on that than on the ending and important scenes. It was still a good read and I will check out other books from this author.

My sixth 5⭐️ read for 2020 was by an author that I just discovered last year whose books are set in the U.S. South. Heartwarming and inspirational.

Andrew65 Looks great. Stacked! 4y
robinb @Kloves2read @andrew65 I actually think I may have enjoyed this one a little more than The Hideaway. 😊 Another great one is Glory Road if you haven‘t read that one. (edited) 4y

I am wondering how many books I‘ve chosen for the cover? I suspect a few. This one for sure. The porch and the swing! This was a warm, uncomplicated read. Easy. 3/5 @TheAromaofBooks

Andrew65 I‘m very much a cover person and use those to help me choose books to read. 4y

Just finished this book and I‘m feeling all sorts of things. I‘m so glad I decided to read this book about a woman building a life for herself after her husband leaves her, and all of the people she meets along the way. This one made my heart feel good!

#JamminJune There‘s a very romantic #slowdance is this book.

This is my 4th book from this author & I love the vibrant southern small town settings, quirky characters, & the stories about second chances & finding your place in the world that she spins. Light & engaging & always filled with tasty food. In this one Lily‘s husband leaves her in Alabama with a note & divorce papers & she finds herself working as a hair stylist in the retirement ⬇️

DebinHawaii ... village of Safe Harbor, owned & run by Rose, a woman who closes herself off from the world. A great summer escape. I paired my book tour review with a delicious Pimiento Cheese & Shrimp Dip on the blog. 🧀🍤😋 Here‘s the link: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2020/06/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of_16... 5y

Today I‘m grateful for Saturdays & no work-work. It was a short week because of Monday‘s holiday but it felt long! I‘ve run my errands, stopped at Starbucks to pick up the Iced Pineapple Matcha I ordered online,😋put a casserole in to cook for a blog post & I‘m settling in to start this one. (I had to superimpose the cover on my Kindle because my #ARC doesn‘t have one & her covers are so gorgeous.)😉

AmyG This is a lovely cover. I‘d love to sit on that swing and read. 5y

This author has such a way with bringing her characters to life. This is my second book from her, and that is a main takeaway from both. I can let a lot of things slide in a book...a plot that‘s mediocre, pacing that‘s off a bit...but if a book doesn‘t contain characters that I can visualize, walk beside or become invested in, it just won‘t work for me. This book is about two women in different phases of their lives. Lily is a 28 yo whose 🔻

robinb husband of 18 months leaves her with a note and divorce papers. In her search for a soft place to land and regroup, she meets Rose, the gruff 68 yo co-owner/manager of the Safe Harbor Retirement Village along the Alabama coast who takes a chance on her and gives her a job as a beautician. There are a cast of seniors, as well as Rose‘s nephew and great niece to fall in love with here...and I did, head over heels. 🔻 (edited) 5y
robinb But at its core, it‘s a story of two women, their struggles, their losses (both of loved ones and of their own dreams) and their self-discoveries and forgiveness of their flaws so that they can move forward with their lives. Beautifully written and highly recommended. All the stars. 5/5⭐️

Up next is my second book by an author (a fellow Alabamian) that I discovered with last year‘s “Glory Road” (a 5⭐️ read for me). I am looking forward to seeing if this one gives me all the feels that “Glory Road” did. 😊🤞
