A Journey to Waco
A Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian | Clive Doyle, Catherine Wessinger, Matthew D. Wittmer
5 posts | 2 read | 11 to read
Only nine people survived the fire that followed the FBI assault on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas in April 1993. In A Journey to Waco, survivor Clive Doyle tells the story of how he joined the Branch Davidians, recounts the dramatic events of the ATF raid, the 51-day siege, and the FBI assault, and provides an update on survivors.

This is the first time I've read a book written by a former cult member who still completely buys into everything the cult leader told him. Clive Doyle makes it clear from the beginning that he firmly believes David Koresh was God coming to Earth in human form and that he'll show up again someday to lead the Branch Davidians. The actual writing style leaves a lot to be desired and could have been condensed to 50 pages.

overtheedge Sounds very intetrsting....esp from viewpoint of someone who buys into it...I will look for this. 6y
Cinfhen @britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I think you two might find this book interesting!! 6y
WorldsOkayestStepMom Have you seen him in the Waco documentaries? He is featured in all of the ones I've watched, and it continues to baffle me that he still buys into it. 6y

Mdargusch So interesting! I‘ve never read a book where the cult member still believes. 6y
Reviewsbylola It definitely sounds fascinating but idk if I can get past the author‘s views. @Cinfhen 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola I‘ve read it. Definitely agree with @JacintaMCarter ‘s review. I rated it so-so and plan to eventually read a less-biased account (or at least biased the other way 😉). 6y
Cinfhen Ok, my two favorite cult followers 😉💟 @britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola 6y

At what point do the librarians become openly concerned about my ILL requests? #WorkInProgressWednesday #WritersOfLitsy #Research

DivineDiana Good question! But not being a librarian (unfortunately), I do not know the meaning of ILL? 7y
DivineDiana Think I figured it out! Inter Library Loan? 7y
Aswenson 😂 I usually assume ILL requests are for ‘research purposes‘ as opposed to ‘how-to‘ purposes. 7y

Mehso-so

There‘s a lot of “maybe,” “I think,” “I don‘t remember,” and “probably” in this account. After reading other reviews, I learned that it‘s basically an oral history from Doyle, so that at least explains the unsurety and the novice writing. It‘s very disjointed, repetitive, and one-sided.

Rated #soso because I did learn a few things, but there‘s got to be a better book about the Waco siege out there.

Eggs Such a tragedy 😓 7y
britt_brooke @Eggs Truly awful. 7y

A couple of passages I highlighted that explain some of the bizarre #BranchDavidian beliefs. #DavidKoresh #cults

EvieBee Hmmm. Interesting. 7y
callielafleur Added this to my TBR. I am listening to the podcast Heaven's Gate, and the events in Waco were instrumental to what ended up happening to the HG followers. If you have interest in this subject, I highly recommend the podcast! 7y
britt_brooke @callielafleur That‘s to go to know - thanks! I‘ll probably see if I can find a book about Heaven‘s Gate, too. I kind of forgot about them! Cults are so fascinating. 7y
Kappadeemom I‘m listening to that Podcast too!! 7y
britt_brooke @callielafleur @Kappadeemom You guys might convince me to finally try a podcast. 👍🏻 7y

britt_brooke @vivastory I remember seeing the flaming compound on the news, but I don‘t remember what happened leading up to that. I was 12 so we‘re about the same age. 😁 (edited) 7y
