The Body Snatchers
The Body Snatchers | Robert Louis Stevenson
12 posts | 14 read | 6 to read
Robert Louis Stevenson's short story The Body-Snatcher (1884) is the tale of MacFarlane and Fettes, a pair of "resurrection men," or body-snatchers - unsavory types who secretly disinter fresh corpses from graveyards to sell as anatomy subjects. This grim little tale is based on reality, as in Edinburgh - Stevenson's home town - body-snatching was so common they built high walls and guard towers around the graveyards. Sometimes, for want of a corpse, an even less scrupulous body-snatcher might just off someone in the night instead of risking a trip to a rural graveyardbut I don't want to give away too much.

Three gothic tales by R.L. Stevenson on Christmas' Eve 😍
The tales are:
-The body snatchers
-Thrawn Janet
-The Merry men

I'm reading the last one and my favourite one until now is the first ❤
Wanna finish it before going to sleep (wake up call early in the morning, I'll have to work 💪)

I think I've read too much about Burke and Hare, the real life Scottish body snatchers who sold corpses to doctors for research, often increasing their corpse supply through murder. I like Stevenson's writing very much, but the story was pretty much what I expected. There was a twist at the end, but the impact wasn't as great as it might have been otherwise.

In March I read 12 books. I discovered Serial Reader which I used for: The Fall of The House of Usher, The Call of Cthulu and The Body Snatchers. My favorites were The Cottingley Secret and Harry Potter 😺

kspenmoll Isn‘t serial reader great? 6y

Read this one with the @SerialReader app. A classic short story. I have to keep reminding myself that this is one of the stories that more modern tales are based on, even though I saw the ending coming I enjoyed the read.

I like being able to say I've read classics and Serial Reader gives me an easy way to read them without getting over whelmed or bored. I think I like the Serial Reader concept more than some of the stories but reading is reading. And it gives me an easy way to read out of my comfort zone. With this story I found it interesting being based on Burke and Hare but didn't hold me as much as I thought it would.

#serialreader This was really meh, I wanted to give it a pan but how could I??? It's Robert Louis Stevenson...so it must be me🎃I'm just not cut out for the classics👿

Caterina You are so totally allowed to think something "classic" or by a "classic" author is bad! And honestly, sometimes classic authors write bad stuff! 8y
Cinfhen @Caterina thanks for the validation😻 I love the app but I'm not loving the reads😿 8y
Caterina @Cinfhen Hmm. I don't know what you like typically, but there are a lot of Sherlock Holmes stories (Arthur Conan Doyle), some Oscar Wilde, some Edith Wharton, some F. Scott Fitzgerald, some good Russian classics, some Shakespeare. Hopefully you'll find something you do like among them! If you enjoy social commentary, you'll find an abundance. 8y

Caterina @Cinfhen I also started Herland because I liked the Yellow Wallpaper so much, and it's nothing like it at all, but it's pretty funny! 8y
Cinfhen @Caterina thanks so much for the recommendations...I'm gamed to give it a go👍🏻 8y
Caterina @Cinfhen You're welcome! I look forward to hearing how it goes! 8y

A chilling short story of medical students driven to horrifying acts in a need for bodies for dissection. Based on the Burke and Hare murders, in which 16 people were killed over ten months in 1828 and their cadavers sold to surgeon Robert Knox (pictured) for his popular anatomy lectures.
