Orphaned young, H is sent to live with her doting aunt in London. H's life is a happy one until her lecherous cousin robs her of her innocence, and the plague takes away the city and the people she loves. H is cast out - friendless, pregnant and destitute - into the rapidly emptying streets of London under quarantine. Forced to fend for herself, she is determined to gain back the life she lost. H will face a villain out for revenge, find love in the most unexpected places, and overcome a betrayal that she never could have foreseen. Weathering it all, can H charm, or scheme, her way to the life of freedom and independence that she longs for?

Today I read this book off #MountTBR.

I cannot remember who recommended it to me, but I'm glad they did.

Great historical fiction set in the 17th century. H comes to live with her aunt in London. Life in the city is good, until the outburst of the plague. Now H has to fend for herself and leads a very adventurous life, without leaving the city at all.

Oh! I liked this book a lot, even though, it sounded a little bit like a fairy tale at the end. The tone of the novel was just right to feel fully captivated by the story.

H (the name of the protagonist) is orphaned young, sent to live with an aunt in London until her innocences is taken and she ends up on the streets during a plague. All is told through first person‘s narrative and is set in 17th century.

BookwormM I really enjoyed this one 2y
mackelie @BookwormM it‘s an unexpected find for me! I thought it might be a very dark story but I was mistaken 2y

“It seemed to me extraordinary that even in the face of a common calamity such as great fire, people could turn on each other in this matter, but then I recalled how cruel the plague had made people to each other, and was obliged to concede that there is no disaster which can befall humanity, that we will not fail to make worse by our own hands, for it is fear that makes us cruel.”

#JoyousJanuary #Readathon

These are the books I will be reading for #JoyousJanuary. I am shooting for 20 hours.

It‘s not too late to join @Andrew65 for his laid back readathon.

thewallflower0707 Have fun with The Strange Adventures of H! I‘m still thinking about it sometimes, it is quite unusual for a historical novel featuring women (in a good way!) 3y
Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 Some great choices. 3y

This is the story of H. Born in the 17th century, she removes to the London home of a kind and generous aunt after the death of her father. But the 17th century is a time of plague and fire and when she is separated from her family she turns to prostitution to survive. There are many sad, difficult moments but H is so full of heart and determination, she always lifts her narrative above the things that happen to her 👇 #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Moray_Reads She is also surrounded by a host of excellent characters who add humour and depth. The setting is well-rendered and while the plot is outlandish, its twists and turns and coincidences mirror the style of contemporary writing.

It was a pleasure to read from start to finish and is the first book in a long to make me shed a few happy tears.

Hits a little close to home, right now. For London, read the World.

I applaud this book for choosing exactly the right tone in everything. It has the right amount of characters, H stays interesting and believable until the end (and what a lovely end!) and, although the plot is often grim and tragic, it never felt too depressing.

Art imitating life or coincidence? This is set during the plague and great fires of London. This is the story of H and the adventures that where her life and how she survived.

Why is nobody talking about this book? It‘s a tremendous romp through England in the 1660‘s (or there about) and includes a girl named H, the plague, some dastardly villains, the great fire of London, a few brothels, a cross dressing sailor, the odd murder and delightful array of colourful characters. Thoroughly enjoyable and escapist.⁣

Set primarily in 17th century London, the book recounts H‘s life story, from countryside to city and many, many changes in circumstance for the young protagonist. H survives a plague breakout (the similarities to modern reactions to today‘s COVID-19 really added a lot to my reading experience!), a great fire and certainly packs in a lot into a short span of years! An engaging and fun read!! If there‘s a sequel, count me in!! Thanks, #NetGalley!

Tashreads I‘d love a spin off novel about Grace and Frankie 😊😉 5y
TorieStorieS @Tashreads Right?! I‘m keeping my eye out for it on NetGalley!! 5y
