There's not really much new here if you are at all familiar with the most well-known serial killers of the 70s and 80s. If you aren't familiar with the likes of Bundy, Dahmer, Gacy, and BTK, then this has some good introductory material. The book is a spin-off of a podcast. I've never listened to it and honestly probably won't. The attempts to interject humor weren't funny. They just felt disrespectful to the victims.

NikkiM5 I need another spooky podcast, which was your favorite? 1y
ElizaMarie @NikkiM5 I really like Sinisterhood. They do serial killers, paranormal, cryptids, just a little bit of everything. Then of course 2020 and Dateline :) (edited) 1y
NikkiM5 @ElizaMarie awesome, I‘ll check out Sinosterhood 1y

The Last Podcast on the Left is an entertaining podcast. Both informative and humorous. This book tries to recreate the magic of the podcast but falls flat. The narrative is interspersed with comedy material. The jokes mostly fell flat and soon became annoying. Luckily the jokey comments were written in a different color so I began to skip them. The paragraphs about the serial killers were pretty interesting. This could have been so much better.

Because when B&N offers signed copies and I have poor impulse control this book arrived today .I am a sucker for EC comics style art & creepy serial killers . Though I never listened to the podcast. #bookmail

At the beginning, this is book for people who like true crime podcasts or documentaries. Very true. I have not listened to their podcast, “The Last Podcast on the Left.“

Pros - As for the book, it is a serviceable retelling of infamous USA serial killers. I read most of it. The illustrations reminded me of the Tales of the Crypt art.

Cons - The asides scattered throughout did not add much. But then not a fan of the podcast.

Definitely not a book for anyone who is squeamish. This was really graphic and gory, but it was really well done. The audio version was really entertains and interesting. I thought they did a great job with giving facts about notorious serial killers while making it engaging and funny all the same. I definitely would recommend this one if you like true crime and serial killers!

This one is going to be the prompt of “based on real person“ as it had stories/chapters on each serial killer that they featured! Anyway it was a great book (I cant say that enough!)

So this book was so good! It took me a lot longer than I originally anticipated because some of these stories (despite the comic relief thrown in) are so heavy it is difficult to “binge“ this topic. I truly recommend this if you are anywhere interested in TrueCrime type of things.. and remember Hail Yourself!

So I‘m looking forward to this chapter on Dahmer. He is more the serial killer of my generation (well a little older but closer than others) but his story of loneliness and despair always intrigued me

So reading the chapter on BTK. It talked about how he had stolen a car at one point and masterbated in it. So funny story -- or gross -- if you are easily offended (please just don't read). One day, I had gotten off work to find a man masterbating on top of my car! My poor baby car!

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm A man once ran his car into the corner of the apartment building right next to my house because he was using one hand to talk to his gf and the other to pretend to be his gf. Bricks from the corner of the building smashed through my bedroom window. No one was home but my poor dog. The man who lived in the hit apartment would have been in bed and killed if his water bed hadn‘t started leaking the night before and he had to sleep on his couch. 4y

jb72 Yuck 🤢 When I worked for the sheriff‘s office, I took quite a few reports of naked people doing weird things. Also a lot of men like to drive through the toll plaza naked (I used to be a toll plaza worker). 4y
Bookworm54 I don‘t understand... on top of? Some people are gross 4y
ElizaMarie @sharread haha it was years ago. Just buck naked sitting on the hood of my car playing with himself! 4y
ElizaMarie @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm wow ... these kind of stories reinforce my belief that things happen for a reason! Thank God that water bed leaked! 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 ha I would hate to drive around naked. I am thinking that it would be super uncomfortable! 4y
ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 yup! Sitting on my hood, buck naked!!! 4y

jb72 That is an interesting fact, but I think it‘s hard to fully determine statistics because how many serial killers are never caught or even found out? 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 true! And the ones they have caught... well some of them lied about their history and upbringing so you can‘t really determine much. Just maybe think... you know? 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I‘ve often wondered about how far fetched the killers‘ lives are. I‘m sure many had terrible upbringings, but some are just plain bad. 4y

Bookworm54 Interesting point @jb72 ! It also links into the nature vs nurture debate. I‘m glad the statistic wouldn‘t put you off adopting @ElizaMarie I have a few friends who foster, and one friend who adopted siblings. It‘s nice to see children (who for whatever reasons can‘t be cared for by their biological parents) be genuinely cared for. It‘s definitely a worthwhile pursuit if it‘s something you want to do eventually :) 4y
Butterfinger Goodness. I haven't thought about it long, but I confess my first reaction was, is it because of the abandonment? I wish the study delved deeper. What is the data on the different ages when adopted? It is a thought provoking question. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Intriguing. I know a lot of people who have been adopted (including my own sister) but none of them have become serial killers... yet... that I know of... 😳 4y
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks that you know of!!!! You may never know! 😬. Just joking and all :) 4y
ElizaMarie @Butterfinger I think it is something worth looking into. I mean I think there is a lot of “unknowns” when it comes to our future. Violence can be unpredictable. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 agreed! I used to work in a forensic psychiatric hospital (with patients that were insanity defense things) some of their stories are heartbreaking. I mean they did some terrible things but yeah it was sometimes hard to remain objective 4y
ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 I can‘t be a momma (because some medical stuff/abuse/trauma) but I always wanted to be. My husband wasn‘t always the wanting to be a dad but then we had this adoption plan that we both fell in love with the boy but it fell through.. anyway maybe adoption is in our future. 4y
Butterfinger I wish you good luck on your journey. 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I can‘t imagine what some people have gone through in life. I‘ve made some bad choices (still do) and I‘m grateful to be in a different place. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 bad choices are a part of life :) but I‘m like you are doing great! 4y

So just a reminder that clowns are terrifying, I just finished the Gacy Chapter and am about to start Ramirez. So yeah this is a really well written book. I am enjoying it immensely.. But it is a bit heavy on some points (I mean the subject matter of course)

jb72 Clowns are creepy. I never understood the idea of them. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 My grandmother used to have a collection of clown figurines. She had porcelain ones, dolls, some paper mâché ones, paintings ... They were terrifying! I ended up keeping her paintings (they were worth something --- and I am an art person but... yeah they aren't up yet. I had told my husband we can put them up in the guest bathroom when we decide where we are living you know?) Ha! 4y
AkashaVampie Great job sweetie with the #CrimeADay. I need to be better with mine. 4y

ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie I don't get to this daily but.. I really do love true crime. So I try to. This book is on my TBR I was hoping to finish it before August but... I don think it will happen. 4y
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie at least u are putting a dent in it. Gotta think positive!!! (Im usually a negative person... haha) 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie haha yes! Also I listen to true crime podcasts ! But yeah this book is great! I am enjoying it! 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie 😱 my mother had a sad clown picture she always hung on the wall. I have no idea where it came from. She too collected porcelain dolls. I find them weird. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 They might be worth something. There was a famous artist that did these super creepy sad clowns. Its weird that this was a “thing“ but yeah.. they are disturbing! 4y
Bookworm54 @ElizaMarie @jb72 have you seen the good place? One of the custom houses is full of clown stuff. I agree clowns are creepy! 4y
jb72 @Bookworm54 @ElizaMarie I‘ve seen the first season of the show. 4y
ElizaMarie @Bookworm54 I have never seen this show (or even heard of it!) But wow clowns why oh why!!! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I love clowns. I get that they creep people out, but I‘ve never understood it... My aunt collected these beautiful porcelain and soft-bodied dolls of little clowns, court jesters, mimes, etc. and I remember sitting in her bedroom being enthralled by their painted faces and lovely costumes. I think if they had been sad hobo clowns, I would have an entirely different view of clowns in general. So I can see now how some people wouldn‘t like them. 😅 4y
ElizaMarie @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I think it might be just the whole “wearing a mask thing“. Also, Gary, Pennywise, Killer Clowns from Outer Space. :) Okay the last one is super silly. But yeah I have always been less the comfortable around them. (I never liked the McDonalds Clown or they had BoBo show when I was growning up!) - Just aged myself again! 4y

If you want an overview of some of the most infamous serial killers in America (& one in Russia), then this would be a good place to start. Particularly the first chapter on Ted Bundy was excellent, some of the others less so. I‘ve never listened to this podcast, although I‘m sure it‘s good, but the jokes don‘t translate well & more often than not were rather annoying and added nothing of merit. Still, as a true crime junkie I‘d recommend it. 4⭐️
