The Perfect Father
The Perfect Father: The True Story of Chris Watts, His All-American Family, and a Shocking Murder | John Glatt
19 posts | 20 read | 28 to read
New York Times bestselling author John Glatt reveals the true story of a Colorado family whose storybook life turned into a nightmare. In the early morning hours of August 13th, 2018, Shanann Watts was dropped off at her Frederick, Colorado home by a colleague after returning from a business trip. It was the last time anyone would see her alive. By the next day, Shanann and her two young daughters, Bella and Celeste, had been reported missing, and her husband, Chris Watts, was appearing on the local news, pleading for his familys safe return. But Chris Watts already knew that he would never see his family again. Less than 24 hours after his desperate plea, Watts made a shocking confession to police: he had strangled his pregnant wife to death and smothered their daughters, dumping their bodies at a nearby oil site. Heartbroken friends and neighbors watched in shock as the movie-star handsome, devoted family man they knew was arrested and charged with first degree murder. The perfect mask Chris had presented to the world in his TV interviews and the familys Facebook accounts was slippingand what lay beneath was a horrifying image of instability, infidelity, sexual ambivalence, and boiling rage. In this first major account of the case, bestselling author and journalist John Glatt reveals the truth behind the tragedy and constructs a chilling portrait of one of the most shocking family annihilator cases of the 21st century.

Bk5 of July is done. Read as an audiobook on Scribd, I came to this after watching American Murder The Family Next Door on Netflix. I will never understand fathers or mothers who think killing their entire family will give them the freedom they want. Watching the videos of those gorgeous little girls then listening to what he did to them was heartbreaking. I hope the rest of his sorry life is a nightmare. #PickYourPoison #AudiobookChallenge2021👇

Solid crime read. I've been obsessed with this story since Shanann and the girls first went "missing". Glatt did his thing and dug deep into the lives and personalities of Chris and Shanann. There's been upset in the ways they have been portrayed but I think the "behind closed doors" personalities are ones we are always surprised to see. Who knows though ?‍♀️

What I didn't understand was the British narrator. Why?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The story of the shocking murders of Shanann, Bella, Celeste and Nico Watts. The author does a good job of giving us background information on everyone involved. Parts of this book were very hard to read because I cannot imagine this happening to my children or grandchildren. So much senseless loss.

Emotionally, this is a tough read, but Glatt‘s The Perfect Father is well-researched and well-written. There are a few Britishisms (for example, “nappies”) that pulled me from the text but otherwise, a strong pick for true crime fans.

Ugh, I read a good amount of true crime, but this was just so incredibly heartbreaking. The sad thing is I don‘t think he‘s ever told the truth about what really happened. My heart goes out to the entire family, I have no words. It‘s a “pick” for me, just know it is hard to read 💔

This was heavy. And incredibly sad. I was fairly knowledgeable able this case, having followed it during the trial and watch documentaries about it. But reading the details of what Chris Watts did to him pregnant wife and daughters... wow. That man is a cold blooded monster.

Another book about Chris Watts?! Yes please! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Glatt has quite a few true crime titles under his belt, and I can tell this one is the most researched of the ones I‘ve read. Glatt has included so many small details about Shannan and Chris prior to the murders. It makes all the difference. The British narrator is throwing me off a bit though. 😂

KatieDid927 I haven‘t read any books about him yet. Would you recommend I read this first or My Daddy is a Hero? 4y
eanderson I almost bought this book today!!! Looking forward to your review! (edited) 4y

Reviewsbylola My Daddy is a Hero focuses more on the psychology of Chris Watts and whether he is a narcissist. This one is more straight forward, classic true crime, so personally I would go with this one first. @KatieDid927 4y

While this was a well researched and detailed account of Chris Watts' slaughter of his family, I was uncomfortable with the portrayal of Shanann. There is no way to know exactly what happened in the privacy of their relationship, but I found it very odd how often Shanann was described in this book as controlling. (Cont. ⬇️)

CoffeeK8 The author focuses way too much on how mean she was and how much "happier" Chris seemed when he was cheating on her before he killed her. The book is clear that Chris is guilty, but I did not feel comfortable with how sympathetically he was portrayed. 4y
BookDragonNotWorm I wonder how different a female author would have portrayed the facts? 4y
CoffeeK8 @BookDragonNotWorm I did wonder that, or someone who was from a different generation 4y

Day 5 - #3Books #BasedOnTrueStories

True Stories is one of my favorite genres.

Andrew65 This prompt will take more thinking about. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 Not for me as I have read a lot of true stories. Maybe you could do some historical true story books. 4y
Andrew65 Not a genre I tend to read. If I think hard I can come up with some suggestions. 4y

True crime story of Chris Watts who killed his wife, Shanann who was 3 months pregnant, their 2 daughters, Bella age 4 and Celeste age 3. It is not an easy read and a very shocking one as they appeared to be a happy loving family. The book is a timeline of how they deteriorated after economic, family and relationship problems. Shows how they lived beyond their means. But why did he do it? Wouldn‘t divorce have been an easier way out? Recommended.

EadieB #ThePerfectFather #JohnGlatt Thanks to LibraryThing and Tantor Audio for a free copy for honest review. (edited) 4y
KathyWheeler That question — wouldn‘t divorce have been easier — is one I often ask when I hear about stories like this. 4y
EadieB @KathyWheeler The husbands always get caught and what makes them think they will get away with killing their family. They are the first ones suspected. Stupid! 4y

Although #TrueCrime isn‘t a go-to genre for me, this book that provides a detailed look at the horrible murder of Shannan Watts, her two young daughters and unborn son at the hands of her husband is a horrifyingly engaging read. The author sticks to evidentiary facts, though there are a few moments that made me pause in an effort for balance. It‘s a heartbreaking story and I just wish that the author had explored even more into driving forces.

This true crime book doesn't come out until July, but there is something coldly fascinating about this family annihilator case that kept me up late, binge reading. Watts had plenty of options to leave his family, but the fact that he chose to kill his pregnant wife and 2 little girls, and then later, when caught, try to blame his wife, is truly chilling and disturbing. I'm glad he was caught, but there's really no punishment fitting. #truecrime

Crazeedi I cant even understand the evil 5y
