8 posts | 12 read | 15 to read
Award-winning YA author Brandy Colbert's debut middle-grade novel about the only two black girls in town who discover a collection of hidden journals revealing shocking secrets of the past. Beach-loving surfer Alberta has been the only black girl in town for years. Alberta's best friend, Laramie, is the closest thing she has to a sister, but there are some things even Laramie can't understand. When the bed and breakfast across the street finds new owners, Alberta is ecstatic to learn the family is black-and they have a 12-year-old daughter just like her. Alberta is positive she and the new girl, Edie, will be fast friends. But while Alberta loves being a California girl, Edie misses her native Brooklyn and finds it hard to adapt to small-town living. When the girls discover a box of old journals in Edie's attic, they team up to figure out exactly who's behind them and why they got left behind. Soon they discover shocking and painful secrets of the past and learn that nothing is quite what it seems.

Brandy Colbert is fast becoming a favorite writer and this doesn‘t disappoint. The mystery held me but also the character development and friendships. #netgalley #myopionionsaremyown #realistic #juvenile #middlegrade

I loved this #middlegrade book! It delves into middle school friendships, bullies, and racism on a tween level without dumbing anything down.

What a great MG book about friendship, family, finding out who you are and a mystery thrown into the mix. Alberta is the only black girl in town until Edie moves into the B&B on her street. They become fast friend but one day they are in Edie‘s room and they found journals written by a young lady who has a painful secret. The two work together to found out who the lady was and uncover her past!

Such a beautiful MG story about growing up, friendship, family, and a bit of mystery. I really enjoyed the story because even though the title suggests it‘s about being the only black girls, it is so much more than that. Both girls find hidden journals in the attic of the old B&B in town. They are uncovering the details of a story from the 1950s.

Oh gosh, I don't read as much middle grade because being thirteen is the worst. But this story of navigating a new neighbor who makes you not the only Black kid in your grade, a long time bestie who seems to be pulling away, and some old journals that seem to contain a secret, captured the essence of being thirteen.

When i was in high school I moved to a really small town. They sucked. And what that community did when a Black family moved in should have been criminal. They didn't stay very long. Hopefully this book has a happier ending then that town 20 years ago.

vlwelser I had a similar experience with moving to a small town. I'm still ashamed of them for the things they did to a girl that wasn't white. Hopefully they're better now. 5y
LibrarianRyan @vlwelser If it's like my parents town it's worse. But I have hope. 5y
