The Hilarious World of Depression
The Hilarious World of Depression | John Moe
A moving, portrait of depression, from the host of the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression "This book is an excellent life raft for those of us who are so sure that we are alone in our struggles. You should read it." Jenny Lawson "A funny, honest book about depression, and what you can do despite it." Neil Gaiman "Candid and funny and intimate." Susan Orlean For years John Moe, critically-acclaimed public radio personality and host of The Hilarious World of Depression podcast, struggled with depression; it plagued his family and claimed the life of his brother in 2007. As Moe came to terms with his own illness, he began to see similar patterns of behavior and coping mechanisms surfacing in conversations with others, including high-profile comedians whod struggled with the disease. Moe saw that there was tremendous comfort and community in open dialogue about these shared experiences and that humor had a unique power. Thus was born the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression. Inspired by the immediate success of the podcast, Moe has written a remarkable investigation of the disease, part memoir of his own journey, part treasure trove of laugh-out-loud stories and insights drawn from years of interviews with some of the most brilliant minds facing similar challenges. Throughout the course of this powerful narrative, depressions universal themes come to light, among them, struggles with identity, lack of understanding of the symptoms, the challenges of work-life, self-medicating, the fallout of the disease in the lives of our loved ones, the tragedy of suicide, and the hereditary aspects of the disease. The Hilarious World of Depression illuminates depression in an entirely fresh and inspiring way.

Arising from the eponymous podcast, John Moe‘s semi-autobiographical account explores the origins of his depression while also discussing the universality of depressive thinking. Humorous yet incredibly touching.

A memoir of Moe‘s life struggle with depression, his many therapists and his brothers suicide. This isn‘t a self help book. It‘s just one guy and his life. It was relatable because Moe is always employed, has a family and is relatively successful. I can understand his life as depression takes many forms and can be hidden. But I didn‘t love it. It was neither negative nor positive and I suppose I wanted more hope maybe.

There‘s really nothing hilarious about depression. If humor is the vehicle to get people to open up and talk about it, there is value in it. This is the author‘s memoir detailing his battle with depression. He hosts a podcast by the same name that features some well-known people sharing their experiences. Some cleaver and witty phrases, but no laughs. Trigger warning ⚠️ : addresses suicide. 3/5🙃s

MyNamesParadise Glad that it‘s good! I‘ve been living with depression for a long time, the past year and a half is the worst it‘s been. Adding this to my list! 5y
EKonrad @MyNamesParadise I hear ya! I also would recommend “Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me.” I found it to be really helpful. And sending positivity your way! 😊 (edited) 5y

Absolutely love this💗makes so much sense. I feel like sometimes people who have nvr had/experienced Depression first hand(or at least been close with someone who has depression) don't understand why it's so hard for a person diagnosed w/ depression to be happy even if they have a lot of great things going for them. John Moe definitely did a great job of explaining it. I'm only 5 pages in & totally hooked on this book, tht is publishing in 2 days

Equal parts sobering, hilarious, and therapeutic! Definitely a book I‘d recommend for anyone with depression to give to someone to help them get a better perspective on what life with a mental illness can be like.
