A Stroke of Malice
A Stroke of Malice | Anna Lee Huber

Scotland 1832. After enjoying a delightful holiday with her family, Lady Kiera Darby is looking forward to finishing her new friend, the Duchess of Bowmont's portrait, as well as attending the duchess's annual Twelfth Night party. Though she normally avoids such fashionable events, Kiera trusts the attention will not be focused on her, but rather her notorious hostess and her family. But upon their arrival at the opulent Scottish estate, Kiera and her husband and fellow investigative partner, Sebastian Gage, swiftly deduce that all is not merry in the duke's household. The family appears to be under a great strain, and someone seems determined to cause mayhem among the guests with a series of forged notes. However, matters swiftly turn from irksome to downright deadly when the merrymakers stumble upon a decomposing body in the castle's crypt. This corpse is certainly no laughing matter, especially when it is identified as the duchess's son-in-law, the Earl of Helmsdale, who had purportedly traveled to Paris more than a month earlier. It is evident the man met with foul play, and Kiera and Gage step in to investigate, at the duchess's insistence. Kiera and Gage must swiftly reexamine the facts, for a ruthless murderer walks among them and may well be a member of the duchess's own family. Kiera soon discovers just how deep the killer is willing to dig to keep their secrets from ever seeing the light of day.

My third 5⭐️ read for 2020 (tagged). Another entry in a favorite historical mystery series.

#12BooksOf2020 #day3

Andrew65 Don‘t know this one. 4y
robinb @Andrew65 It‘s the 8th in the Lady Darby series. I would recommend starting at the beginning as it has wonderful characters/supporting characters to watch develop. 4y

A murder-at-the-manor mystery, this adds an extra level of ambiance with it being set in Scotland during the holidays. A body is discovered in the dungeons. After deducing that the man met his end by nefarious means, Kiera and Sebastian are asked by the host family to suss out the killer from amongst the invited guests. Trouble is, everyone has their secrets, and no one wants to share.

Dollycas‘s Thoughts
The author sets a scene in almost a magical way. From the deep, dank catacombs, to the Sunlaws suites and ballrooms, and the Scottish countryside.

I have enjoyed this series since I read the first book. I think this may be the best yet. Certainly, it‘s my favorite since the initial installment. The writing is a cut above many historical novels. There were a number of interesting plot twists and red herrings. I also love the complex characterizations. Definitely recommend.

Yesterday was release day for this, and it arrived yesterday afternoon. One of my favorite authors and a great series. I‘m excited to start this.

robinb I got my physical copy today and that cover is even more gorgeous in person, isn‘t it?! I was lucky enough to read an ARC but wish I was just starting like you. 😉 Loved it! Enjoy! 5y
Lynnsoprano @robinb It‘s gorgeous! I think it‘s the best of hers. 5y
robinb @Lynnsoprano I‘m always excited to see her covers because they never disappoint! They really capture mood/location and exactly my mental picture of Kiera. 😊👍 5y
ValerieAndBooks I was actually looking at the Lady Darby you sent me way back, and planning to getting to it very soon. Sewing masks have been keeping me from reading much. 5y

1. Not an activity, but I love watching all of the gorgeous trees/bushes/flowers bloom in glorious colors! 💙💚💛🧡💜

2. A little of both...but probably lean more toward introvert.

3. 9 and quite a few of those were very enjoyable. 😊

4. I‘m a day late (and a dollar short, as my Nanny used to say 🤣), so if you‘d like to play and haven‘t, please jump in! 😊

Thanks for the tag @eanderson ! 💕

The mystery was interesting and I loved that it was woven around a Twelfth Night party that was a little naughty in nature, not religious. The roles at the party muddied the investigative waters so to speak for Gage and Kiera and there were a few great twists that were a bit of a doozy. From the discovery of the body to the conclusion of the case, the clues kept on coming but the danger also escalated and this was a great read.

Crazeedi Nice review, and #CoverCrush! 5y

My visits with Kiera and Sebastian are always such fun and much too short. This adventure finds them celebrating Twelfth Night at a duke‘s castle and stumbling upon an unknown murder victim during a ghost tour in the underground tunnels/catacombs. 😳The duke‘s rather large and unorthodox family are prime suspects, and Huber‘s descriptive writing and plot kept me riveted (as usual). Her characters are so real and engaging I don‘t want to leave. ⬇️

robinb Another wonderful addition to a fabulous series! 5/5⭐️ @BerkleyPub #NetGalley 5y

I feel so fortunate to have received this ARC for the next installment of the Lady Darby series (number 8)...one of my very favorites! 💚💚💚 If you enjoy historical mysteries and haven‘t read Huber, give her a try. She also writes the Verity Kent series (love it too!).

Bookzombie I love this series! I like to listen to them, so I‘m waiting on the audio from the library. 🙂 5y
robinb @Bookzombie 😊👍 I‘m not much of an audio book person, but I bet this particular series would be great for that! 5y
