The Trouble with Hating You
The Trouble with Hating You | Sajni Patel
31 posts | 32 read | 29 to read
A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy debut about first impressions, second chances, and finding the love of your life in the most unexpected way. Liya Thakkar is a successful biochemical engineer, takeout enthusiast, and happily single woman. The moment she realizes her parents' latest dinner party is a setup with the man they want her to marry, she's out the back door in a flash. Imagine her surprise when the same guy shows up at her office a week later -- the new lawyer hired to save her struggling company. What's not surprising: he's not too thrilled to see her either after that humiliating fiasco. Jay Shah looks good on paper...and off. Especially if you like that whole gorgeous, charming lawyer-in-a-good-suit thing. He's also infuriating. As their witty office banter turns into late night chats, Liya starts to think he might be the one man who truly accepts her. But falling for each other means exposing their painful pasts. Will Liya keep running, or will she finally give love a real chance?

Liya has a stormy relationship with her parents who spring a set-up on her at a family dinner. She runs from it only to find out the guy is Jay, the new lawyer at her work brought in to save the company. While their rocky start gradually turns into a comfortable friendship, Liya‘s past rears its ugly head and threatens to not only tear them apart, but oust her from the community all together.

Cute #Romance

Both had a troubled past that had an influence on their current dating behaviour. But both characters grew and the HEA felt real rather than constructed.

A number of good, recent contemporary romances seem to have protagonists dealing with past trauma. This is no exception. It's an enemy to lovers story featuring two Texans of Indian descent. Liya is really hard to like, but when you learn her backstory, you understand her much better. Trigger warning for past sexual assault.

Supporting characters are good, though I'd have loved to see them further fleshed out, and the hero is dreamy. 4❤️#romantsy

Cute! Reads like a rom com movie. She got on my nerves a bit with insisting on being “different” and looking for things that were wrong, but the moments they had their chemistry were definitely my favs.

This book reminds me of one of my favorite movies ever, Monsoon Wedding. The picture top right is of the niece, Ria, who the night before the wedding reveals that one of the uncles, the rich one throwing his money around, had molested her when she was a girl. The father of the bride, a different uncle comes to take her home where the day of the wedding he tells the rich uncle to leave. He believed her. Such a powerful moment. In this book, 👇🏼

Reggie the MC is a victim of a sexual assault, that nobody, not even her own father believes, saying that for something like that to happen to a girl she must have brought it on herself. And because her offender is a well respected person in their tight knit Indian community, she always has to see him. She grows up to be successful but with huge walls around her. And because this is romance there is Jayeh, the perfect guy to make those walls crumble. 3y
Reggie Despite all this, this was actually really funny and cute…..but with some really serious issues thrown in. I loved this book. 3y

My first book of 2022 was one I was supposed to read in December since it's an #LMPBC pick 😂 Don't want to say too much here for that reason. I did like this one, but found the MC a little difficult at times. Also there is a lot of marriage-bashing and I wasn't a fan. But on the whole, a good story and I was totally rooting for the main couple.

Hoping to mail this one today!! @robinb @DanaManiac @kimmypete1

I fell off the #WinterGames bandwagon a bit this past week as things got a lil crazy at work. I even forgot to post my Week 4 scores, so Week 5 is going to be huge!!! Hoping to wrap things up strong with #20in4 - I'm a bit burned out on the holiday flicks, so I'm focusing on finishing the tagged book for #LMPBC and I randomly started reading Deep Blue so I'm going to see if I can read the full four-book series this weekend!!
@Andrew65

Andrew65 Good luck, great to have you with us. 😊👍 3y
Allylu Yes, I noticed the posts have veered away from holiday reads. Everyone is gearing up for January, including myself! Happy New Year! 🎆🎉😊📚 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This was interesting because 2 chapters in, I was ready to quit. But I had friends who encouraged me to stick with it&by the end, I couldn‘t put it down.I‘m impressed with the character development we get to see, especially Liya -&honestly found some of her issues relatable to how I felt about romance&marriage in my early 20s(happy to say a decade into marriage that I was wrong 😅). So some stuff to get past/get used to, but then it‘s good!

behudd @TheAromaofBooks this was my July #bookspin book! 3y

5/5 ⭐
I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about indian culture. It was a hard read at times for a particular reason.
I was expecting a fluffy romance but the story was so much more.
I liked all the characters. Liaya friendship with her friend was real. Jay and his family was very real. I absolutely loved reading about them.
I think everyone should read this book. It has an important message to deliver.

This is labeled as a Romantic comedy. At first I thought I wouldn‘t like it because it was so misogynistic and had so much slut shaming. But I like that Liya and Jay got through it.

TW ⚠️ For sexual assault and having to deal with your attacker.

This is also a clean romance. There is a lot of sex talk and a lot of flirting, but no sex on the page. Honestly, I didn‘t even realize they had sex until the next chapter.

Laughterhp Oh, I forgot about one of the things that annoyed me in this book. She was almost bragging that she paid $1400 for a pair of shoes. Which I think is ridiculous and it was mentioned multiple times. I don‘t care that your shoes cost $1400 🙄 4y

Sajni Patel's The Trouble with Hating You, which I read as part of a buddy read, is an amazing contemporary romance that effectively represents a relationship between two people who are still recovering from trauma.⠀

Liya Thakkar is a confident, Indian-American woman with a successful career, but she is plagued by difficulties in her relationship with her parents, who want her to be married. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod They invite her over for dinner and then shock her by sharing that they've also invited a prospective husband and his mother as well. Liya's reaction is decisive and blunt, and she leaves the house in protest . . . and runs straight into Jay Shah, said prospective husband.

Thus begins an enemies-to-lovers novel. Liya, a survivor of assault, is still haunted by the reactions of her parents and her community when she tried to share what happened.⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod The evolution of Jay's response to Liya as he navigates each new discovery about her, each new rumor someone tries to spread, each new friend of hers that he meets is realistic and thought provoking. I also appreciated Jay's own recovery from the tragedy surrounding his father's death. And of course, in the midst of these more serious topics, there is plenty of romance and steam! 4y

Really enjoyed this on #audio while painting by number. Solid romance, I liked the feminist take in a traditional setting and the extended families added so much fun! I‘ll definitely check out the rest of the series 😄

Felt very pride and prejudice but set now in a Hindu community in Texas. Misunderstanding and family pressure put a couple off to a rough start.

I enjoyed this one. It wasn‘t perfect, and sometimes the dialogue or scene was a little stilted, but it didn‘t change my feelings about the story overall.

Both MCs had tough pasts to work through and it made for some tough situations. Not so much a hate-to-love, more like a hate-to-one-sided-stubbornness-because-of-self-doubt-that-dragged-things-on-a-little-too-long.

I liked the ending. It was very fitting for the characters and not forced.

This is such a fantastic enemies to lovers romance. Liya and Jay get off on the wrong foot when she parents spring an introduction on her, and things only get worse when he shows up as the lawyer trying to save her company from lawsuits. The characters are wonderful, and I really enjoyed this read.

While I am admittedly a sucker for love/hate romances I am beginning to notice it‘s very hard to get it right in just the right way. This story started with some predictable banter, but cut to meant to be too quickly. There was a lot of push and pull, it just felt redundant. I also thought a book about an Indian romance would have some character to its story. There‘s notes of feminism as well. Unfortunately, both are underused, which is a shame.

I spent the entire book vacillating between loving & hating this book! She was ridiculously annoying by making sweeping statements against guys & marriage, but I could also understand why she did. But still so annoying that she painted all guys with the same paintbrush. I am really glad that he persevered though, because he definitely deserves to be happy. Also guessing the next book is going to be about the bestie that likes the non-Indian guy.
