Hypnotic and beautifully written, a surreal fever dream full of disturbing details and repeating, reforming, and recursive scenes and stories. Highly experimental, the best analogy I can give is of taking a strong edible and then going to an independent theater on a hot August day to cool your body in AC while melting your brain with some super weird foreign experimental filmmaking. I‘m excited to experience more of Bae Suah‘s work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It was a new experience for me…I feel like I should read it again to tie it all together. It starts with a former actress working at an audio theater, which will soon be shutting down permanently. But perhaps that‘s all unimportant. What follows is a (as the translator calls it) ‘repetition, mirroring, echoing, and overlapping‘ of events, characters and details. Hard to describe. Definitely worth a read. Or two. Or three.

I can't make any sense of this book. I can't tell what's real or what's not. I can't understand how what seems imagined or historical in one scene is real in another. I don't understand how the characters seem to switch places and identities and also move between real and imagined (they also seem lost and confused.) ↘️

I‘m not sure what I just read or how to rate it. It‘s a twisty tale with odd repetitions that make the reader question everything, but at the same time, provides no answers. I may have given up if it hadn‘t been such a short book, but then again I felt compelled to continue despite my confusion. Suah excels at creating a tangible atmosphere-you can feel the heat and humidity, and there‘s this sense of oppressive dread throughout.

Incredible. Lucid writing and translation, singular characters, and a propulsive story that pulls the rug out from under your feet. The comparison with David Lynch is apt, with recurring motifs & moving from reality to the surreal. I almost understood what was happening, but not quite. Ideas of memory & the impermanence of things, & she plays with blindness & vision. Tightly written, engaging and will give your brain a workout. #witmonth
