I Don't Want to Die Poor
I Don't Want to Die Poor: Essays | Michael Arceneaux
7 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of I Cant Date Jesus, which Vogue called a piece of personal and cultural storytelling that is as fun as it is illuminating, comes a wry and insightful essay collection that explores the financial and emotional cost of chasing your dreams. Ever since Oprah Winfrey told the 2007 graduating class of Howard University, Dont be afraid, Michael Arceneaux has been scared to death. You should never do the opposite of what Oprah instructs you to do, but when you dont have her pocket change, how can you not be terrified of the consequences of pursuing your dreams? Michael has never shied away from discussing his struggles with debt, but in I Dont Want to Die Poor, he reveals the extent to which it has an impact on every facet of his lifehow he dates; how he seeks medical care (or in some cases, is unable to); how he wrestles with the question of whether or not he should have chosen a more financially secure path; and finally, how he has dealt with his dream turning into an ongoing nightmare as he realizes one bad decision could unravel all that hes earned. I Dont Want to Die Poor is an unforgettable and relatable examination about what its like leading a life that often feels out of your control. But in Michaels voice thats as joyful as he is shrewd (BuzzFeed), these razor-sharp essays will still manage to make you laugh and remind you that youre not alone in this often intimidating journey.

nikirtehsuxlol I have a strong admiration for people who talk openly about money, including their struggle with debt. First chapter in, I‘m digging Michael‘s book. 4y

This was good! Nothing ground breaking - listening to the consequences of student debt is actually quite sad and stressful (I know, shocker), but these essays had tons of smart, funny and lovable bits to balance everything out. Michael is a great writer, and he makes serious shit fairly digestible.

I went thru this in one easy day, which is a win for me. Will look up his first book too 🖤

Well worth reading - especially for those with crippling student debt. I can‘t pretend that I got all the pop culture references but I still enjoyed it and appreciate his thoughtful intelligence.

Usually when I DNF, I fully intend to finish at some point! I just lose steam and think, "I'll set it aside for now and come back to it later." Here are #3Books #IDNFed that I *will* pick up again someday! Really!

Andrea313 @rubyslippersreads I got about a third of the way through it, and just tapered off. But I truly do want to finish it! If you get there before me, I look forward to your review. 📚 4y

Arceneaux is so good. So much truth and humor.
This one I really connect with as an American with huge student debt. It is nice to hear truth and reality to the situation. I also get to giggle at all the nicknames he gives a certain politician.

But there is a shame that comes with not having enough money. We live in a culture that demonizes people for not having money like there‘s something wrong with them. I have carried so much shame with me for so long. I have never wanted to talk about it.” “Knowing people aren‘t being honest with what they are showing you doesn‘t mean what they show you still can‘t get to you.”

SW-T This sounds really interesting. Thanks for posting it! 5y
