Literary Traveller in Scotland: A Book Lover's Guide
Literary Traveller in Scotland: A Book Lover's Guide | Allan Foster
7 posts | 24 to read
"The Literary Traveller in Scotland" opens up Scotland's literary landscape for the first time in one concise volume. All prominent Scottish writers from the 14th to the 21st century are included and discussed in their literary, historical, and cultural contexts, set in the landscapes where they were born and which inspired them. It details the birthplaces, childhoods, former homes, and burial places of famous Scottish authors; uncovers sites, restaurants, and pubs with a literary connection; and lists notable bookshops, literary museums, and other places of relevance in the world of Scottish writing.

Flying out tonight; we'll be in Edinburgh Friday morning. I can't wait!! Any bookshop recommendations, Litsies?

vivastory @Moray_Reads is the one to ask 8y
LeahBergen Oh, lucky you. Enjoy your holiday! 8y
Moray_Reads Ooh, there's three great second-hand bookshops on Bread Street (Armchair Books, Edinburgh Books and Main Point Books). My favourite indie (The Edinburgh Bookshop) is on Bruntsfield Place. There's also an excellent Blackwell's on South Bridge and a large Waterstone's on Princes Street. They're all pretty central and within 30 min walk of each other 8y

Ok, some of you asked for pictures of our cottage so here goes. This used to be the gardener's cottage on the estate. It's old and cosy, has lots of books (there is another shelf) and if this cupboard doesn't shout Narnia, I don't know. :)

Lizpixie Oh it's gorgeous! Please post more, I'm trying to live vicariously through you. And some hot Scotsmen would be great too👌 8y

Scotland has greeted us with typically Scottish weather. We've settled into our cute little very old cottage, the kiddo was so knackered that he is already asleep and we're relaxing with a good book now. ❤

Leniverse A rain front the size of Germany just washed in over Wales, so that's probably what you've got up in Scotland too. I hope the accompanying gusts of wind sweeps it all onwards and away quickly! 8y
Daisydo So jealous! 8y
Libby1 Have a great time! Will you be getting to Edinburgh or Glasgow? 8y
See All 12 Comments
scripturient @Leniverse That would be nice. But then a little rain doesn't hurt and not expecting any at this time of year would be very optimistic. :) @Libby1 Definitely Edinburgh. Not sure yet about Glasgow. 8y
Balibee146 Terrible weather today - ummmm welcome lol. Yeah let us know if you make it towards Glasgow :-) 8y
Libby1 Both are lovely. There is so much to see and do. Any literary outings planned? The National Library in Edinburgh is lovely and is located near the Elephant Cafe where JK Rowling wrote the early Harry Potter books. The view of Edinburgh Castle is amazing from that cafe. 8y
asiriusreader What a fun trip!! Enjoy making memories! 8y
erinreads I miss Scotland. 😭😭😭 8y
elkeOriginal I hope you maybe make it to Glasgow too - I loved my visits there 💕 Stirling? Fantastic castle country, is Scotland...❤️🏰❤️☂️👍 8y
scripturient @Balibee146 Will do. :) @Libby1 Yes, I love Edinburgh. Have been several times before and it is one of my favourite cities. ❤ 8y
scripturient @elkeo The Stirling castle is great. Didn't care much about the city itself but the castle was awesome. :) 8y
Balibee146 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caerlaverock_Castle Possibly in the wrong area for you but this is my favourite ruined castle. Also close to sweetheart abbey and Roberts Burns' house for a literary fix :-) 8y

Reading myself into the mood for our upcoming trip to Scotland in March. Not that I need motivation or anything but it's nice to read up on things after so many years away. 😉

Lizpixie I am so jealous! I've dreamed of the Scottish Highlands and Islands for years. You are so lucky.😘 8y
erinreads I'm so ready to go back! And it's only been 3 months since I was there. 😭 8y
Thessalia I have been to England once, Ireland twice... but Scotland is next. Scotland has a bit of mysticism in those hills that I want to really get in touch with. Someday soon... little envious - have a blast! 8y

scripturient @lizpixie I know. We're so lucky to have this beautiful country close by. It's only an 1.5 hour flight from here. This time we're taking the car and going by ferry. That should be an experience. 😂 8y

BookishFeminist ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Scotland. I'm partially Scottish & just took my first trip there a few years ago. Can't wait to go back!! Where did you go while there? 9y
scripturient @BookishFeminist We've mostly been around Edinburgh and Fife where we have friends. I LOVE St Andrews but there are so many places to still explore. For next year we're planning a two-week holiday, staying in Fife but using that only as a base for trips in all directions. :) 9y
BookishFeminist @scripturient So jealous! I do hope you share pictures. If you get the chance to make it up to the Highlands, it is BEAUTIFUL. I stayed in Inverness for a while and loved it. 9y
scripturient That's one of the places I definitely want to go. :) 9y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Glencoe will always be the Home of my Heart no matter where I am. I can't wait to take my Husband there so he can see why I miss it so much! 9y
AwkwardlyAlive Oh my gosh, Fiancé and I are going to honeymoon there next summer. I must get this book! 9y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Must get this! We're planning a trip for next summer! 9y
scripturient Hahaha, looks like a popular destination for next year. Maybe we should have a Litsy get-together at the Edinburgh book festival. 😉 9y
scripturient BTW, there is another title like this but specifically for Edinburgh. 🤓 9y
todd The ghost tour in Edinburgh is worth checking out! 9y
scripturient @todd Thanks for the recommendation! Haven't done the ghost tour yet but I also highlx recommend the literary pub crawl. 9y
