Mending Life
Mending Life: A Handbook for Repairing Clothes and Hearts | Nina Montenegro, Sonya Montenegro
3 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
Mending Life is a beautifully illustrated, practical tool kit for repairing the clothes and belongings we love. It is also an exploration of how mending can be a gently healing practice in our daily lives and a small act of rebellion in a world where many things are discarded without thought. Mending Life encourages us to cherish our things by repairing them rather than discarding them. It also encourages us to change our consumption habits so that with small mends here and there, we extend the life of our garments and other household items. This handbook is for beginners but also offers more advanced techniques to those with some experience in mending. You'll learn basic techniques such as patching, but will have options to take it a step further with decorative sashiko stitching; you'll also learn how to darn socks and mend sweaters, as well as things like a tear in a bedsheet or down jacket. And along the way, the authors share heartfelt stories about the powerful act of mending, which strengthens not only the object we are repairing, but ourselves as well. Vibrant, full-color illustrations are woven throughout the handbook. Mending Life is a timeless, practical guide to cherishing and caring for our belongings.

"When we mend, we are participating in the healing of the world, as
mending is a profound act of restoring integrity to an object and our rela-
tionship to it."

This book is more than a guide on mending, it's a love letter to mending. Beautiful illustrations, including drawings on how to tie a knot, and wonderful family stories of the authors.

Deifio Lovely! I might need this book. My daughter goes through so many woolen tights it's ridiculous! 5y
julesG @Deifio Darning! My least favourite mending technique. But worth it, because you just can't buy new things twice a week. Also, perfect time for #audiobooks. I didn't learn anything new from the book, but that's because I had to learn all those mending techniques in primary school - the advantages of growing up in East Germany before the Berlin Wall fell. 5y
Deifio Any German book you can recommend on mending and darning?
Haha, now I know how old you are 😉

julesG @Deifio Ha, I tend to quote the great German "poet" Sido: "Ich bin im Osten aufgewachsen bis ich neun war." (turning 40 in 7 weeks) ?. I'm not sure about books on mending in German. Maybe I should write one. ? 5y

Interspersed among the practical techniques/diagrams for mending & darning are sweet peaceful illustrations and philosophical musings on how positive the act can be on one's psyche. This book has no new information for an experienced sewist in terms of the how of mending, but even a seasoned seamster may find something new and uplifting in the introspective portions.

I received an ARC of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
