pickThis story came to me from one of my librarians. It‘s the 1st in a trilogy, with Mrs. Rodd as the amateur sleuth. She is a widow & has a lawyer brother who often sends her on mysteries to help with his clients. I liked this mystery a lot—you can guess the killer early on, but the way it is revealed is very good. Will read the other 2, sadly the author died a couple of yrs after the 3rd one.

pickThis was exactly what I was in the mood for. A very well-written mystery which has a certain degree of coziness but is not kitschy. I found the characters very engaging, the historical detail solid and enjoyed that it had a broad perspective of women's experiences not just the privileged. It felt very natural and easy to read. Stong pick.

Laetitia Rodd is a 52 year old widow living in Victorian England, rather than move in with her brother and help raise his wild children, she lives in a boarding house and covertly works as a PI. All while being the model of a Victorian lady. They are so cozy!
pickThis was a decent mystery. But what I loved about the book was the relationship between the narrator and her brother. I don't find many relationships depicted in books involving middle-aged siblings who enjoy each other as friends without added complications of aging parents, cheating spouses, etc. Instead, she and her brother truly enjoy each other's company and spend time together without spouses or children. No drama. It warmed my heart. 😍
pickAs expected, a quick and fun, if unremarkable, mystery. This one transports readers to 1850 England where the recently widowed Laetitia Rodd supplements her meager income by assisting her brother, a lawyer, when something needs investigating. Her most recent case has her delving into the lives and secrets of a wealthy family and the unsuitable woman the eldest son & heir has fallen in love with. Borrow not buy but I did enjoy it. A solid debut.
Pulled out this ARC last night after another deep dive into my TBR stacks—I‘ve had this one forever...since BEA 2016 in fact. It‘s the first book in a series (assuming it did well enough for the series to continue) featuring Mrs. Laetitia Rodd, 52 and a widow, who solves mysteries. Five chapters in and I‘m enjoying it much more than I expected too—so far it‘s a light, entertaining read.

pickEnjoyable "old school" British mystery with a redoubtable,older vicar's widow who investigates to save an innocent man from the gallows. Not extraordinary, but a step up from a cozy.

pickTo be honest, I haven't felt much like reading this week. I've been too scared for people I love & too generally upset to focus on books. But I finally sat down and finished this one. It's a nice Victorian mystery with a Dickensian element and some interesting characters.
I will not be anywhere near a store today, so I think I am safe in saying I made it to the end of the month and didn't buy a single book. I didn't read a lot from my stacks though, since the library buried me in holds. November goal is to read more off my shelves than from the library...Happy Halloween!
