The Patron Saint of Pregnant Girls
The Patron Saint of Pregnant Girls: A Novel | Ursula Hegi
8 posts | 7 read | 14 to read
From beloved bestselling author Ursula Hegi, a new novel about three mothers, set on the shores of the Nordsee, perfect for fans of Water for Elephants and The Light Between Oceans. In the summer of 1878, the Ludwig Zirkus has come to the island Nordstrand in Germany. Big-bellied girls rush from St. Margaret's Home for Pregnant Girls, thrilled to see the parade and the show, followed by the Sisters who care for them. The Old Women and Men, competing to be crowned as the islands Oldest Person, watch, thinking they have seen it all. But after the show, a Hundred-Year Wave roars from the Nordsee and claims three young children. Three mothers are on the beach when it happens: Lotte, whose children are lost; Sabine, a Zirkus seamstress with her grown daughter; and Tilli, still just a child herself, who will give birth later that day at St. Margarets. And all three will end up helping each other more than they ever could have anticipated. As full of joy and beauty as it is of pain, and told with the luminous power that has made Ursula Hegi a beloved bestselling author for decades, The Patron Saint of Pregnant Girls is a shattering portrait of marriage and motherhood, and of the ways in which women hold each other up in the face of heartbreak.

August 1878. Nordstrand, Germany. The Ludwig Zirkus has arrived for its annual appearance, setting up its tent on the grounds of St. Margaret‘s Home for Pregnant Girls.

I really enjoyed Hegi‘s Children and Fire and would like to read more of her work, including this one.

A bottle of petite Syrah spilled on this magical book, and I wonder if it was on purpose.

Hammocking qualifies under “weird things you do in a quarantine”. We got them to prepare for an upcoming Michigan trip. My daughter is stoked. Not gonna lie, it‘s kind of relaxing.

Amiable How is this book? I have it in my TBR. 4y
peaKnit @Amiable I‘ll let you know when I make a bit of headway👍🏻 4y
peaKnit @Amiable I think I‘m bailing, I just can‘t focus on this book for some reason. I‘m struggling to follow the story so far. 4y
Amiable @peaknit That‘s disappointing. 😕But thanks a bunch for the heads up—I‘ll get it from the library instead of buying it if I do decide to give it a go! 4y

This book is great. I definitely recommend it.

It's the story of loss. A woman loses 3 of her children in a freak accident. People from the circus and the local home for pregnant girls join the search. The story is about the family but also about the girls and the nuns and the members of the circus. The setting is Germany in the mid-1800s.

I received an #ARC from #Flatiron via #Netgalley
Pub date is August 18th.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick You had me at circus! 😁 5y

Once I got into the flow of Hegi's writing style, I found this to be a beautiful story of girls, women and old women and how their lives intersect.

(The flowers make this e-ARC cover much prettier! 😊🌸)

I love that we are now in outside patio reading season!

The cover of this ARC on my Kobo reading leaves everything to be desired but so far it's been really good!

A good multifaceted view of grief & hardship, following how the human mind & soul deal with loss. Highly character driven, the story provides bits and pieces of three women's journeys as they process their own personal moments of grief. The character driven approach provides insights, but can be frustrating because it feels like there is so much more potential. I was left underwhelmed and frustrated with the construction & the ending.

A nearly fantastical panorama of human experience is lived out within one small island, one small traveling circus (Zirkus), and the island‘s convent, St. Margaret‘s, a haven and school for pregnant girls. Hegi‘s style is ethereal and methodical at the same time, with a flood (Hochwasser) of emotions just beneath the surface. jillrhudy @Reviewsbylola It is *definitely* not a cozy! Very much historical literary fiction (some might say magical realism but to me she never went there). 5y
