I really enjoyed Hegi‘s Children and Fire and would like to read more of her work, including this one.

Hammocking qualifies under “weird things you do in a quarantine”. We got them to prepare for an upcoming Michigan trip. My daughter is stoked. Not gonna lie, it‘s kind of relaxing.

It's the story of loss. A woman loses 3 of her children in a freak accident. People from the circus and the local home for pregnant girls join the search. The story is about the family but also about the girls and the nuns and the members of the circus. The setting is Germany in the mid-1800s.

pickOnce I got into the flow of Hegi's writing style, I found this to be a beautiful story of girls, women and old women and how their lives intersect.

The cover of this ARC on my Kobo reading leaves everything to be desired but so far it's been really good!
so-soA good multifaceted view of grief & hardship, following how the human mind & soul deal with loss. Highly character driven, the story provides bits and pieces of three women's journeys as they process their own personal moments of grief. The character driven approach provides insights, but can be frustrating because it feels like there is so much more potential. I was left underwhelmed and frustrated with the construction & the ending.
pickA nearly fantastical panorama of human experience is lived out within one small island, one small traveling circus (Zirkus), and the island‘s convent, St. Margaret‘s, a haven and school for pregnant girls. Hegi‘s style is ethereal and methodical at the same time, with a flood (Hochwasser) of emotions just beneath the surface.
