The Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club PickINSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"A sumptuous garden maze of a novel that immerses readers in a complex, vanished world." --Kirkus (starred review)An utterly transporting novel set in 1930s colonial Malaysia, perfect for fans of Isabel Allende and Min Jin LeeQuick-witted, ambitious Ji Lin is stuck as an apprentice dressmaker, moonlighting as a dancehall girl to help pay off her mother's Mahjong debts. But when one of her dance partners accidentally leaves behind a gruesome souvenir, Ji Lin may finally get the adventure she has been longing for.Eleven-year-old houseboy Ren is also on a mission, racing to fulfill his former master's dying wish: that Ren find the man's finger, lost years ago in an accident, and bury it with his body. Ren has 49 days to do so, or his master's soul will wander the earth forever. As the days tick relentlessly by, a series of unexplained deaths racks the district, along with whispers of men who turn into tigers. Ji Lin and Ren's increasingly dangerous paths crisscross through lush plantations, hospital storage rooms, and ghostly dreamscapes.Yangsze Choo's The Night Tiger pulls us into a world of servants and masters, age-old superstition and modern idealism, sibling rivalry and forbidden love. But anchoring this dazzling, propulsive novel is the intimate coming-of-age of a child and a young woman, each searching for their place in a society that would rather they stay invisible."A work of incredible beauty... Astoundingly captivating and striking... A transcendent story of courage and connection." --Booklist (starred review)

Captivating: entwining family relationships, youth seeking a better life, traditional beliefs, and crime thriller in British-colonized 1930's Malay. The story alternates between a houseboy whose master has died leaving him with the responsibility of locating his severed finger, and a girl making her way when cut off from schooling who is pulled into a vortex of serial mysterious deaths. Again, insights into a country and time I know little about.

#littensdressedinblood #September 13 #prompt : #Superstition
I was debating between this one and “Ghost Bride” by the same author.
From Goodreads: A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers.
Fascinating!

Trying to get some reading in while visiting the in-laws. Lovely little community, I could easily get used to this lifestyle! (And if you look closely, you'll see our duck friend who was hoping to use the pool, too. 🤣)

Overall, I enjoyed it. The author created an engaging world in 1930s Malaysia, interweaving British colonial, ethnic Malayan, and ethnic Chinese characters into one story. I raced to the end to find out what happened. Unfortunately, what appeared to be a mysterious tale with supernatural elements ended almost like a stereotypical British mystery. A book with great promise and ambition, it just didn't stick the landing for me. Close though!

#LitLite Evocative and whimsical/ set in 1930‘s #Malaysia while still a British colony. There‘s mystery and romance and a touch of Chinese mythicism. Audio was wonderful. A bit melodramatic at times but still enormously engaging. #ReadingAsia21 #Pop21 #AdvancedPrompt

Cinfhen I think you‘d like this one @Crazeedi 💜 4y

Part mystery/ part Chinese folklore and a bit of a love story has me completely enthralled ( although I could do without the romance) Loving the audio - read by the author who has the loveliest melodic voice 💗🎧 #ReadingAsia21 #Malaysia

Megabooks Interesting!! I just emailed you back and talked about my Malaysian roommate in college. I have a separate Malaysian friend from camp at Brown in high school. They are incredibly different in class, ethnicity, career, and religion but were both raised there. I‘m definitely interested in this book! 4y
Cinfhen I think given your knowledge of Malaysia you might like this one @Megabooks but it‘s not your typical genre 4y
Librarybelle I realized after reading your post from yesterday that I picked this up as a #BOTM , so maybe I found my #Malaysia book! 4y

Cathythoughts Sounds good 👍🏻 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve had this on my shelf for awhile - I loved her previous book 4y
Cinfhen A character in this book mentions his uncle who sold his daughter as a ghost bride @thegirlwiththelibrarybag and when another comments on what happened the person cheekily answers “that‘s another story” I thought it was cute of the author to sort of wink & nod to her previous book. Anyway, I think you‘ll enjoy this one!! It‘s a bit whimsical but I‘m enjoying it🥰 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Cinfhen, oh really! I love those kinds of nods! I lent both books to my Nana during one of the lockdowns and she loved Night Tiger (I think Ghost Bride went too far into magical territory for her). 4y

I enjoyed this. Loved the mythology and cultural descriptions. Enjoyed the structure and switch between two main characters. I wasn‘t weirded out by the relationship that bothered many. And I liked the touches of magical realism.

Preserved fingers & weretigers & ghosts, oh my! I loved Yangsze Choo's first novel Ghost Bride, and this story did not disappoint for me. Set in 1930's Malaysia, you traverse the both physical and mystical world through the eyes of a dancing girl, an orphan boy, and a foreign surgeon. If you are a fan of learning about other culture's beliefs and culture with a dash of mystery, definitely pick up this story!

I did not like this book much, but I remain committed when I start one, so there ya go. Some cool aspects regarding Chinese folklore. I think, in this case, the movie would be better. Kinda hope they make one. #reesewitherspoonsbookclub #hellosunshinebookclub

It's a fantasy set in 1930s Malaysia: houseboy Ren must locate a severed finger that once belonged to his late employer and bury it in his former master's grave so that the dead may rest in peace; meanwhile, dance hall girl Ji Lin accidentally comes into possession of a preserved severed finger. I loved the strong characters, the rich setting and the complex plot. Recommended.
