This kaleidoscopic novel intertwines the lives of a Brooklyn mother in 2016, a senators wife in 1970s Washington, D.C., and the Bibles Queen Esther, whose stories of sex, power and desire overlap and ultimately convergeshowing how womens roles have and have not changed over thousands of years. Lily is a mother and a daughter. And a second wife. And a writer, maybe? Or she was going to be, before she had children. Now, in her rented Brooklyn apartment shes grappling with her sexual and intellectual desires, while also trying to manage her roles as a mother and a wife. Vivian Barr seems to be the perfect political wife, dedicated to helping her charismatic and ambitious husband find success in Watergate-era Washington D.C. But one night he demands a humiliating favor, and her refusal to obey changes the course of her lifealong with the lives of others. Esther is a fiercely independent young woman in ancient Persia, where she and her uncles tribe live a tenuous existence outside the palace walls. When an innocent mistake results in devastating consequences for her people, she is offered up as a sacrifice to please the King, in the hopes that she will save them all. Following in the tradition of The Hours and The Red Tent, The Book of V. is a bold and contemporary investigation into the enduring expectations and restraints placed on womens lives.

Even though I enjoyed reading this, I intended to rate it as so-so, but after the intense book club discussion yesterday, my estimation of it has improved. 😊

Mehso-so

This was not for me. Told in multiple POVs, I liked some of the characters better than others and that is why I stuck with this.

Thanks to partner NetGalley for the digital ARC of Anna Solomon‘s The Book of V in exchange for an honest review.

Anna Solomon‘s The Book of V, out May 5th, is an astonishing and beautiful novel. Through three parallel stories, Solomon explores the ways that women can fight to define their identities, even in situations when they seem to be powerless. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod At the heart of the book is the biblical story of Esther, the second wife of the king. Solomon uses this story as the core of her book, telling it on page 1 and retelling it with different details and at different depths, until we come to consider both the truth of the story and the nature of storytelling in general. In the story of Esther, the king‘s first wife, Vashti, descended from royalty (and, therefore, outranking her husband) ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod disappeared under strange circumstances–the king had tested her by asking her to strip naked in front of a crowd of advisors. When she refused . . . well, no one knows because no one has seen her since her refusal. ⠀ ⠀
Esther, one of a nomadic group of Jews who have settled for decades along the palace wall, enters a contest for the king‘s attention. ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod She‘s cast out from her family because her beauty gives her such power over men, and with that power ironically comes a loss of control. She and hundreds of other girls put themselves up as candidates for marriage. After the ranks of the competitors diminish, the final contestants parade in front of the king. ⬇️ 5y

UnabridgedPod Esther alone forgoes the extravagances of makeup and adornment and thereby catches the king‘s attention, the exact opposite of her intention. The narrative then follows Esther into an unwilling marriage and the political machinations of the king‘s advisors. Throughout the book, Solomon uses this story to ground the narrative, but also to challenge the original tale. ⠀

I absolutely loved this book, I loved the stories of all three main characters. I feel like I should have seen the connection in Part 3 coming, but I didn‘t, and that made it all the more surprising and enjoyable. I also read this right after Untamed by Glennon Doyle and I feel like they both had a great message that we will perpetually be works-in-progress.

4/5🌟This is a Biblical retelling of the story of Queen Esther with modern interconnections.
Told from three perspectives Lilly, Vee and Queen Esther whoes story was odd at times to me, but I did loved how Solomon weaved her story in with these other womens. Ultimately showing the progression of womanhood from ancient times to modern day. Solomon's writing is rich and compelling. This moved a bit slow for me but I ultimately did enjoy it.

Bailing at the 40% mark. This book is terribly executed and the writing is cartoonish. The character of Queen Esther, my favorite biblical heroine is unrecognizable. This would be a skip from me.

TrishB Oh dear.....won‘t be rushing to it then! 5y

Cinfhen I chose the Kidd for my #BOTM @Librariana I‘m hoping it‘s good 🤞🏽Have you read it?? 5y
Librariana @Cinfhen - Unfortunately, no! Not yet, at least. I read the blurb (which is why when I read about Book of V I was reminded of Book of Longings) and saw Glennon Doyle (author of Untamed) sing its praises. I ordered it from one of our local indies 😊 Hope to read it soon! 5y
Crazeedi Thank you for this, I'm so disappointed, it sounded like a good one, and I requested the ARC 5y
