Pickpick

YA novel between pick & so-so for me, but I‘ll round up for the nostalgic 1987 vibes & the California beach town setting (that just happens to be modeled after Santa Clarita from The Lost Boys-even the Frog Brothers are there.) Lots of triggers (so most appropriate for older YAs) & uneven, but it kept me turning the pages. I liked the main character, Mayhem & the feminist leanings & girl power, but could have used more character development...

DebinHawaii I paired it with a Fruity Green Juice Smoothie for my blog tour stop. Full review & recipe here: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2020/07/blog-tour-book-review-for-mayhem-by.h.... (BTW it‘s tagged as The Lost Boys meets The Craft— yes to the first, maybe a little of the second, mainly in how having power, not used correctly or judiciously can be dangerous.) (edited) 4y

Wanted to love this YA tale of a teenage feminist with magical powers - but I just couldn't get past the confusing mythology and sloppy writing. ⭐️⭐️

Honestly, this was like a YA version of Practical Magic. It's cute. If you're into that. I thought it was a little flat.

I received an #ARC from the publisher via #netgalley.
Pub date is July 14th 2020.

kyraleseberg Yes, Lost Boys meets Practical Magic is the perfect description for this 4y

Not gonna lie, it‘s been a long, trying week even if it‘s only Wednesday. Things that helped me over the hump & I‘m grateful for: 1) I grabbed one of my favorite sandwiches for lunch on my way home: Falafel Banh Mi, Lychee Lemonade & a Lilikoi Macaron—the perfect treat. 2) My food processor conked out & my new one arrived today. 3) A #bookmail #ARC & an e-book ARC, both for book tour reviews. New books always make the day better.🌞

Texreader Great way to get over that hump. Hope Thursday is a better day! 5y

JoScho Oh I love falafel. We are gonna try to make it at home today for the first time 🤞 5y

3.5/5

Mayhem is being described as a “YA feminist mash up inspired by The Lost Boys and The Craft.” I didn‘t really get The Craft or a lot of feminist vibes from this book. There were a decent amount of The Lost Boys references but almost too much. It was still a quick read that had magic, mystery, and family aspects.

Slated for release this July, Mayhem is a coming of age story set in the 1980s. Perfect for fans of 80s movies this book reads like a mix of The Lost Boys and Practical Magic. Nostalgic and familiar while being fresh and unexpected, this book of magical realism provided a nice escape from reality right now!

BookmarkTavern Ooo, that sounds great! 5y
