Loved this fascinating biography of engineer Beatrice Shilling, whose adaptions to the Spitfire‘s Merlin engine saved many an RAF pilot‘s life.

#BookReport managed two more books on top of my forecast
Fragile Things - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on balance, a good collection of short stories and poems
Negative Gravity ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent biography of a woman who should be lauded more
Inside Out ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Either Moore is still learning about herself or she‘s holding back.
Inside the O‘Briens ⭐️⭐️Important subject handled dully.
Unnatural Habits ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ my favourite Phryne of the series so far

I loved this little book, and learned so much from it, not least about how much Beatrice Shilling did to improve the performance of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that powered many of the iconic British warplanes. She received an OBE for her work, yet I expect few people outside of a very narrow field of war-plane enthusiasts have even heard of her. This book gives an insight into her character, work and relationships.

#TIL that not only is there a Women‘s Engineering Society, but that this year is its centenary. Why is this not better known?

Very much looking forward to reading this later this week, about the life of 1930s engineer and racing driver Beatrice Shilling

Had a bit of a review of my reading plans last night, having realised I was probably stretching myself to thinly this month. So here‘s this week‘s #WeeklyForecast, I‘m really looking forward to reading Negative Gravity, about the life of a brilliant engineer in the 1930s, who just happened to be female (gasp!). Will also squeeze in a couple more Phrynes, about a kick-ass 1920s woman. I‘m spotting a theme!!
Early version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (which powered the Spitfire & Hurricane) had an issue in negative G force, such as a steep dive, that caused the engine to cut out - quite an issue during a dog-fight! The problem was alleviated by #TheThingummyBob invented by Beatrice Shilling, a small flow restrictor that ensured the carburettor didn‘t flood with fuel. The device became know as Miss Shilling‘s Orifice
