Up from Slavery | Booker T. Washington
25 posts | 37 read | 22 to read
Up from Slavery is one of the most influential biographies ever written. On one level it is the life story of Booker T. Washington and his rise from slavery to accomplished educator and activist. On another level it the story of how an entire race strove to better itself. Washington makes it clear just how far race relations in America have come, and to some extent, just how much further they have to go. Written with wit and clarity.

Born into slavery and still young when granted freedom, Booker T Washington was determined to get an education & help others in his position to do the same. While I enjoyed the first few chapters about his early life and experiences after slavery, the rest of the book-about establishing the Tuskegee Institute-was rather dry and unemotional. Low pick.

TheBookHippie We did this for Bookclub several years ago. I agree with your review. It‘s a bit dry at the end. 10mo

#OnThisDay in 1856 educator, author, and political advisor Booker T. Washington was born. In addition to authoring 14 books, he was also a key investor in numerous Black- authored publications and newspapers. While his "up by the bootstraps" philosophy put him at odds with other Black thinkers such as W.E.B Dubois, he was a regular advisor to multiple Presidents and it is impossible to deny his lasting influence. #HistoryGetsLIT

"I've decided that, if I accomplished nothing else in this life, I somehow would get enough education to be able to read common books and newspapers" (Booker T Washington) -no matter what adversity comes through, you can overcome and make a difference.

I didn‘t expect to struggle with this autobiography as much as I did. Washington was an admirable man of great accomplishment. I liked hearing about his early years and his experience after slavery, but the latter part seemed like a thank you to a lot of rich white men that helped him, mixed in with self-congratulations. I can appreciate a positive outlook, but some of the almost excusing of slavery/slaveholders seemed kind of icky.😬

⭐️⭐️1/2

I finished reading Up from Slavery this morning. Reading from this text gave me a new perspective on Washington‘s life compared to conversations others have spoke about his life. I admire Washington‘s perseverance at that time and his steadfastness to get his goals accomplished.

Day 4: Independence.... the Door of no return in Ghana. Thousands of slaves left this slave port never to return. This is reminder that in 1776 freedom, liberty and independence was not available to everyone. My Gullah ancestors included. #independence #gullah #readingresolutions

This is a good read for those that don‘t know the story of Booker T. Washington. It‘s amazing that a man can come from being a slave to the foremost educator for blacks in the United States. I wish our nation would put the issues of races to rest and realize all people are truly equal. Mr Washington shows us how much can be, and still needs accomplished.

My audiobook this month, for Black History. Unending fortitude to get an education. Several “Booker T” schools in my area and my son‘s friend recently got a full ride at what is now Hampton U. Mr Washington is to the point and gives some insight on the race relations after the Civil War and how the ex- slaves coped with their new found freedom. An easy read and even though written in 1901, sets you right there with him.

TheBookHippie We read this last year for book club. It was amazing to read about his life. Sent me to the library for more! 7y

Oh, Mr. Washington. You worked so hard. A hundred years later, I‘m not sure if the South deserved you.

A well written memoir. The narration didn't sound natural for some reason, but it was done well. What I found most interesting was when Washington talked about the creation of The Tuskegee Institute. I know the importance of the institution, but didn't realize what went into its creation. I found some of what Washington wrote/said was far too hopeful and even a bit naive. I don't know if he wrote that way for a reason, or if that was truth for him

OrangeMooseReads Washington writes about racism and how he and The Tuskegee students were treated by white people not just in the south but in the north as well. He makes comments about not seeing the raisin or issues with race. I don't doubt that he did have positive interactions with whites in the south and the north, but to say that it didn't happen is a bit naive and it's hard believe that there wouldn't have been issues. 7y

#audiostitching during soccer practice. It's cold and it's been raining off and on all day so I'm in my car (passenger side window down so I can hear and see and also easily get out if Man Cub needs me). The hand looks super wonky lol but until I backstitch the lines of the fingers they will.

CrowCAH OMG that is sooo cool! It's looking great; can't wait to see it finished! 7y
OrangeMooseReads @CrowCAH thanks. Hopefully I'll have it done this weekend. 7y

Thank you all for the well wishes. My migraine is finally gone 🙌 just a little lightheadedness and dizziness leftover. I could still curl up and sleep and did for a little bit today. I'm waiting for Man Cub to get out of school, I was hoping to work on my cross-stitch, but forgot my scissors ☹️
I leave you with Izzy being cute.
