Mehso-so

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in for a fair and honest review. A dinner party amongst friends, a dinner party game that is meant to be fun. After the dinner party guests start dying...maybe the fun game involving everyone's deepest darkest secrets wasn't the best idea that night. A good read, it held my interest but wasn't what I would call a page turner, the end seemed kind of rushed and far fetched.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What harm can there be in a dinner party game amongst friends? This book is an absolute rollercoaster of drama, what starts as a harmless game after a meal with friends descends into utter chaos.

RedJhon I haven't read a good thriller in a while... Guess I'll start with this :D 5y

Hi Everyone! Time for today's #IsolationInteractions discussion 😁 Today it's a variation on the dinner party game: if you had to go into a 14-day isolation with three authors, who would you choose and why? (We're talking the authors themselves, not their works). Comment below, or create a new post (just don't forget to tag me!).

My three are listed in the comments.

TheKidUpstairs Neil Gaiman, for smart, fun, imaginative discussions
. Eden Robinson, because she's funny and her author bio lists one of her hobbies as "Shopping for the apocalypse" so she'd probably be well prepared
. Trevor Noah, because he's smart and funny and ???
5y
Amiable Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, because they are both wicked smart and I think it would be fascinating to listen to them talk about history. And Wally Lamb because I love his books and I have actually met him in person and he is a super nice guy. 5y

Tove_Reads Naturally impossible to choose... Plus, who‘s an author? I mean Jane Goodall and David Attenborough have written books... But, if we‘re talking author authors (not famous for other things as their main thing) I‘d go for John Boyne - wow, his writing is just superb, Angela Marsons or Jane Casey for mystery, and Ken Follett for historical fiction (and thrillers) @EadieB @Andrew65 5y
Lindy @TheKidUpstairs Eden Robinson and Neil Gaiman are both excellent choices. 👍👍 5y
Lindy @Tove_Reads John Boyne is a good suggestion. I heard him at a couple of events at the Vancouver Writers Fest and he seemed so funny and nice. Love his writing too. 5y
Lindy One author I know for sure I would invite is Ali Smith. Lots of authors are smart, but sometimes their intelligence is intimidating. With Ali Smith, I feel her warmth would counteract the intimidation I would otherwise feel. 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I'm going to Tove's dinner party as I love those authors too! @TheKidUpstairs @Andrew65 5y
julesG Tough one. Any author, dead or alive? Robert Louis Stevenson, JK Rowling, Mo Hayder. Certain this'll be a fun time. 😁 5y
zezeki Margaret Atwood, J. K. Rowling and Neil Gaiman. If I can add a dead author, then also Oscar Wilde. 5y
MissAimz_55 Jodi Picoult, Stephen king, JK Rowling and sorry I am cheating but also George rr martin. Because they are my favorites and I think great and deep conversation would be had by all 5y
Itchyfeetreader Elinor m Brent dyer (it‘s niche I know!), Neil Gaiman and Robert Harris I think. Not sure why they‘d talk to each other about but ..... 5y
AmyG Stephen King (he loves music so we could have a music chat), Rachel Maddow (we could talk politics), David Sedaris (I know in my heart we would become best friends). 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Amiable that would certainly make for interesting discussions! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Tove_Reads for the purpose of the game, I'd say anyone who's written a book is an author! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Lindy Ali Smith is a great choice! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @julesG dead authors are totally allowed to enter isolation with you! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @zezeki dead authors are totally allowed! Great choices. 5y
TheKidUpstairs @MissAimz_55 do you think with 14 days in isolation we could force George to tell us how he plans to finish SOIAF? 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Itchyfeetreader sometimes disparate people make for the most fun conversations! 5y
TheKidUpstairs @AmyG well thought out, great selections! 5y
mrp27 Hmmmm.... Dr.Seuss, Mo Willems and Shel Silverstien. I'm clearly in the mood for some fun, lighthearted conversation and a bit of silliness. What about you @Bookwormjillk ? 5y
TheKidUpstairs @mrp27 fun choices! 5y
Bookwormjillk @mrp27 I‘ve been thinking about this. I want to say Stephen King, but 14 days? What if things get weird. So probably my 3 favorite woman mystery authors Louise Penny, Sue Grafton (RIP), and Sara Paretsky. 5y
AsYouWish Julie Garwood, because she is one of my favorite authors and I would love to chat with her. Bram Stoker because of my love of vampires and Dracula. And James Patterson because I have challenged myself to read all of his books and maybe we could discuss some of them. 5y
Amiable @AmyG I wanna be invited to your quarantine party! 5y
youneverarrived Trevor Noah is a great choice! This is tough actually but I‘d have Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf. Although saying that being isolated with Capote might grate after a few days 😂 (edited) 5y
mrp27 @Bookwormjillk lol! I agree, things could get weird with Stephen King! 5y
BookishMe Victoria Schwab, Alexander McCall Smith and Amitav Ghosh 5y
Lizpixie Stephen King, because who wouldn‘t want a chance to pick his brain? Agatha Christie, because she was a pioneer in the female crime writers field, plus she was brilliant. And finally Terry Pratchett, because he was so much fun! 5y
Smrloomis I feel like I would need several lists of course 🤔 but for fiction Paul Yoon, Ann Patchett, and Carlos Ruiz Zafon. They have really different styles and I ❤️ them for different reasons. 5y
Smrloomis Oh and Mohsin Hamid. Hmm, but then I would have to drop one of my other choices. This is hard! 😂 5y
Bigarn72 Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Garry Wills. The conversation would probably never end. 5y
mcipher Ann Patchett bc she just seems awesome and smart and interesting. Steven Hall so he can tell me more about the hidden and secret Raw Shark Texts stuff. Jennifer Crusie because she‘s just so fun and quirky and I love her books. 5y
CarolynM Stephen Fry, Nancy Mitford and Elizabeth Peters. They are all so witty, the time would fly by. I would have chosen Oscar Wilde, but I suspect Stephen would be speechless in his presence. @Itchyfeetreader Elinor M Brent Dyer is a great choice🙂 5y
Itchyfeetreader @CarolynM I mean in the cold light of day she is probably not of our time and more than a little problematic. BUT such a huge part of my childhood I couldn‘t not take the opportunity for a chat (although what‘s she‘d think of a girl from Liverpool is anyone‘s guess!) Stephen Fry great choice !! (edited) 5y
ElizaMarie Stephen King (because he could tell me such wonderfully vivid bedtime stories), Pablo Neruda (he would dazzle me with such lovingly beautiful words), My hubby (because he is my hubby and tells me stories and writes me poetry when I guilt him into it) 5y
cleoh Ooh great question! I think Sarah J Maas because she‘s my favourite and I‘d love to talk to her, Nikita Gill because she tells such beautiful stories, and Amie Kaufman/Jay Kristoff (I‘m counting a duo as a single entity 😉) because who doesn‘t want to go on vacation with best friends! (edited) 5y
TheKidUpstairs @ElizaMarie great answers! And it sounds like you've got a very sweet hubby 😁 5y
ElizaMarie @TheKidUpstairs He is. I tell him he is my favorite Author with Stephen King being a very close second! 5y
Cinfhen This is a fun one!!! I love reading the responses and I‘m dying over Trevor Noah!!! Let‘s see I‘d choose David Sedaris, Abbi Waxman ( not because I really love her books but she seems like a person I could totally hang with) and Emily St John Mandel. I‘m hoping she‘ll bring me a copy of her new book.... 5y

Mehso-so

Good premise and storyline, but overall disappointing book for me; I was hoping for something Agatha Christie-like, but this wasn‘t quite it. I felt the author was offering too many explanations and the story seemed overly wordy and too long. I would have loved for this book to have been shorter.
