One Day
One Day: The Extraordinary Story of an Ordinary 24 Hours in America | Gene Weingarten
17 posts | 6 read | 24 to read
A journalist pulls a random day in history from a hat to see if he can make a worthwhile news story from what happened. The result is One Day, a deeply illuminating and affecting exploration of the quiet dramas and human interaction that make a seemingly insignificant day - December 28th, 1986 - into an important, poignant part of American history.

12/28/86 - a day chosen at random and a book written about the events that happened on this ordinary day. My one addendum is it was selection of events that happened on this day, not a comprehensive view of the day. It was a mix of great writing, observation, and a little philosophy at the end. Turns out no day is ordinary. The stories will appeal most to fans of true crime. I couldn‘t put it down and it made me think a lot. #jolabokaflodswap

Blaire @Chrissyreadit Yes. Likely - it was one of the last books I read last year and the concept and execution was great. 3y

This book is fascinating so far. The current story, around 1:15 on “the day,” tells of an incident I‘ve never heard of. Shop owner Prentice Rasheed, fed up with incessant burglaries in his store, sets up a booby trap as a deterrent. Unfortunately, a burglar was killed by it one night during a break in. Prentice was arrested but a jury refused to indict him, saying he had never intended to use deadly force.

tpixie Interesting! 4y
Cinfhen Cool concept for a book 😊Happy Holidays, Steph 😘😘That long overdue book is on its way to you..... 4y

Pickpick

12.28.1986 - a date picked at random. The book digs up stories from around the country for each hour of the day. It then catches up the story to today. I couldn‘t put it down. Well-written and researched. From heart transplants, to murder, to last minute marriages with drama, it shows how much happens on any given day if we look. Really covered the breadth of human experience and a picture of life in 1980s America. Highly recommend.

LiteraryinPA What a fascinating concept! 5y
Blaire @LiteraryinLititz it was! So many stories go untold everyday. People‘s lives are fascinating. 5y

Great book; tells the stories of several things that happened on a randomly chosen day (12/28/86) and the aftermath. The takeaway is that there's no such thing as an ordinary day. I didn't choose it as a holiday read but it's surprisingly appropriate. #nonfiction #history

Tagged! I think I talked short this book more than any other this ready.
Favorite reading spot is on the couch next to the window. Or standing in line anywhere.

Tough to do a #WeeklyForecast this week with Thanksgiving coming up, but I'd just like to finish one or more of the above! One Day is really good; it's the story of different things that happened on 12/28/86, a randomly chosen day. Decadent Society started well; is getting a bit odd, but it's an ARC. Belichick & Fashionopolis have been in progress for a while, and I've wanted to read Dignity because I really like Chris Arnade's writing. @Cinfhen

squirrelbrain I‘d be interested to hear your thoughts on Fashionopolis - I‘ve picked it up a couple of times in the library, but not broken got it home (yet!)... 5y

This book really gives perspective on how one ordinary day changed lives forever. I keep telling everyone about it and I think they think I'm crazy but it's so good!!

I'm loving this book so far. Such an interesting premise. It's made me try to remember what I was doing on December 28, 1986. Probably wallowing in my teenage angst and driving my parents crazy!
