Nothing to Report

pick

As the title indicates little of substance happens in this book, rather it is a series of little incidents in the world of a well born English lady living in reduced circumstances in the year before WWII. Mary Morrison is as capable as many of her aristocratic friends are frivolous and she spends much energy supporting them in various ways. There is much delightful small detail and much quiet humour but also strong foreboding of the coming war 👇

CarolynM I was interested in the elements of "the Season" that are still around today, like Ascot and Wimbledon (I bet the ticketing system is different now) and what has gone by the board - I'm thinking particularly of Catha's references to the accessories she needed for her daughter's presentation at court. Ruthiella I did enjoy it! There is a bit of a romantic arc to Mary‘s story that was introduced quite late and left slightly open, which I liked... 4y

LeahBergen Yes! I very much enjoyed it myself. It felt episodic to me, didn‘t you think? I just finished it last night and felt that it definitely benefited from a “binge” type of reading; there were so many characters but once you got stuck in, it flowed better. I was very interested in the Ascot bits. Have you ever hears of this book (on my TBR)

CarolynM @LeahBergen Yes, definitely episodic. It also assumed quite a bit of knowledge which I think would have made it hard to follow for some modern readers. I will read the sequel, quite soon I think. I don't know the book you tagged, but I've read this one

quietjenn I finished it last night as well and agree with so much of what has been said! Loved the quietness of it. Of supporting characters, am all about the Dowager - I do think it would have been helpful for a character cheat sheet in the beginning! With all the little scenes embroidered & painted. It says in the introduction that the author was a ‘ formidable needelwoman‘ ... she embroidered tiny vignettes ‘ recording a once secure world that has gone ‘... I often thought of this comment as I read. 4y

Ruthiella I love all the small details too. For example, how there are certain things only available for purchase in big cities or how there are no 24 hour supermarkets where in can just pop in and buy when there‘s an unexpected dinner guest! 4y

Do you think the reader is supposed to find Mary‘s friends sympathetic? Lady Rollo is starting to get on my nerves a little. She‘s so incapable of anything but relies on others to do for her...🤨

CarolynM Lady Rollo is very irritating. I feel for her children - I'm glad they have Mary. She's probably fairly typical of the ladies of the Raj, though. (edited) 4y

rubyslippersreads Lady Rollo gets worse and worse. Some of her later comments remind me of Rose‘s mother‘s snobby comments in “Titanic.” 4y

Im really only getting in an hour of audio ( different book) on my morning walk. There‘s a new strain of Covid in England now , that‘s more contagious.... my son is there on work just now. London. Which is being hit hard. Crazy days friends. Stay safe 😘 4y

CarolynM I'm nearly halfway through - we've had visitors, we've been out or entertaining most nights this week and there's cricket on TV so I haven't had a lot of reading time. I'm enjoying the characters and the niceties of the social interaction of minor gentry and the middle class. The spectre of war is quite well done, I think, it grounds the story (such as it is) very firmly in its time. Hope your son is safe, @Cathythoughts and will soon be home. 4y

CarolynM I'm in the same boat @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I've not had a lot of reading time, so I haven't got very far, but I'm enjoying the characters and, like you, Ruth, the details of daily life. I'm hoping to have a bit more time today to get properly stuck in to it🙂 We have finally made a plan to go to my parents in Adelaide for Christmas but we are watching the news carefully to be sure it's safe for them. quietjenn @CarolynM my favorites of Fair's were Seaview House and Winter Away, although I've enjoyed all of them. I think the only one I haven't read yet (hoarding it!) is Landscape in Sunshine. Beyond Fair, I really loved the E. Nesbit they published, The Lark and am always partial to D.E. Stevenson. And A Chelsea Concerto is one that has really stuck with me and I think about often. I'm definitely on board for the buddy read, if you all will have me! 🙂 4y
