A giant buttload of fun. Highly recommend the audiobook.
A giant buttload of fun. Highly recommend the audiobook.
This was a fun fantasy about a Dragon that makes it home in the Louisiana Bayou and a young teenager who happens upon a dangerous situation and the agreement that the two strike in order to keep each other safe. Delightful read! Excellent narrator! Loved every moment of it. Highly recommend!
The story was fun, but the graphic and dirty words were a bit much. Wasn‘t the Dragon act shrek story it was explained as. But the general dragon hating humans slowly befriending humans was there. Slightly. It was hard to weep up at points, dragging on others making me skip through a few lines. Was having trouble keeping up with the plot besides being against that frightening Hooke character. But I loved Vern and Squib growth

I enjoyed this book and I adore Eoin Colfer! True to form, the characters are the best part of the book with his atypical premise coming in a close second. Ultimately I did a 180⁰ and went from wanting to quit to loving every second of it. If you are having a hard time getting into this one as well, I highly recommend persevering OR do what I did, get the audiobook... it was well worth the time... you'll laugh, cringe and cheer.
Great book!
Solid start to #bookspinbingo with this fantasy that was just a blast from start to finish! Set deep in the Louisiana bayou, there‘s a crooked cop, a teenage delinquent and his momma, alligators, drug runners, and, of course, Vern - an ancient dragon who is obsessed with Flashdance and eats sugary cereal and vodka for breakfast. A fun fantasy full of snark, heart, and humour. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @TheAromaofBooks
My #bookspinbingo board for September 📚 Mr Midshipman Hornblower is my #bookspin book while The Wych Elm is my #doublespin 📚 I am, however, starting with the tagged book which I am loving so far 🐉 @TheAromaofBooks
Am I too late for #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks ? Hoping that September will be a better reading month than August was 📚
Wild and hilarious! All young Squib wants to do is to work and provide for his single mom and protect her from one of the most hateful, unrelenting evil deputies ever. With no use for school, he‘s fishing in the Louisiana swamps and taking on odd jobs for dudes who can give any of Carl Hiassen‘s characters a run for their money. Plus Vern, short for Wyvern, a real dragon who takes Squib under his wing. Laugh out loud revenge, not for the squeamish!
I loved this book. I‘m not much of a fantasy fan, so I rolled my eyes a bit at the idea of a dragon protagonist. But a vodka swilling, Flashdance shirt wearing dragon? Yes, please. The relationship between this bayou dragon and his scrappy Cajun teenage friend, who loves his mama, but just can‘t quite be good, is wonderful. Warning: this is not a kids book. It is very violent and there‘s a psychotic bad guy. Violence aside, I loved this one.
I just started this book and I can already tell I‘m going to love it. I loved the Artemis Fowl books and I think this is a great author. But this is NOT a kids book.
The worlds last dragon lives in the swamps and drinks a lot. The street rat who gets a little to deep into the local crime scene. Together they might be able to make this part of the world a better place
Alright, so Vern is definitely one of the most loveable characters I've ever read. It seems very odd to say this about the main character, but I wanted more of him. I feel like a really big chunk of this book was told through Hooke's perspective, although he is one heck of a bad guy. Gimme a sequel with lots more Vern! Balls out, Highfire. (Pictured...my only little fangy dragon princess)
Welcome to the Louisiana bayou where dysfunction is the norm and maladaptive behavior is the only way to survive. The main villain, Regence Hook, was a laser-focused, cold-hearted, callous covered, sociopath wannabe...constable. I‘m sorry to say that I did not enjoy this book which was overflowing with graphic violence and filled with excessive foul language. I usually get attached to characters, but in this book, I didn‘t even like any of them.
I bailed on this book. It seemed interesting enough as I listened to it, but I found I've had to force myself to pick it up again.. don't know if that's me or it because I really liked Artemis Fowl. Maybe I'll pick it up again later.

Read this with a smile on my face. He normally writes for young people, but this black comedy (with dragon) is firmly for adults. Vern has been hiding out in the Louisiana swamps for decades. He's discovered by Squib, who wants to help, and a corrupt policeman, who definitely doesn't. Violent set pieces, lots of mud, and many alligators.
Highly recommended!
Squib: ‘What‘s your opinion of Game of Thrones, boss?‘ Angry clattering of furniture. Vern: ‘Game of Thrones? Are you trying to push my buttons, kid? Game of fucking Thrones! Those dragons are like servants – you see me doing any fucking Mother of Dragons‘ bidding? I‘d never serve humans!‘
Squib: ‘I didn‘t mean nothing—‘
Vern: ‘Goddamn lapdog CGI motherfucking fire lizards. Heap of shit.‘
Conclusion: Vern really did not like Game of Thrones.
Eoin Colfer makes me laugh.
Hooke knew that people found it difficult to hold his gaze. They felt it in him, the deep well of aggression, the boundless need for conquest. Hooke could twist his mouth into a grin and relax the tension in his shoulders, but he couldn‘t do shit about the eyes.
So he bought himself some Wayfarers to disguise the animal bloodlust.
Hey, it worked for Tom Cruise.
Why for the life of me can I not learn to DNF a book?
I torture myself through things I obviously don‘t like and then wonder why I don‘t feel like reading
Two main things that bothered me:
The revolting language and the fact that it read like YA
❇️Highfire (Tagged); Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; and Trigger Warning
❇️Middlegame by Seanan McGuire
❇️🤔 I think The Grinch... Hadn't watched any TV or Movies thus far this year.

I had to return the book. Perhaps if it wasn‘t an audiobook I would have persevered because drug deals and evil lawmen are something I should enjoy but the fake (I hope they are fake, or I am never going south of NY state again ) accents and the constant singing while talking just got on my nerves. I can not judge the book but I would recommend you don‘t buy the audio
Rats! I totally expected/wanted to love this. I really like the Artemis Fowl series, fantasy, and dragons. Instead, I'm bailing at 30% (2:50:40). Not floating my boat: the rapey internal/external dialogue of Hooke, the general base/crass tone of the book, too much bodily function humor (yes, there's some of that in Artemis Fowl, too—it's more limited and purposeful there), and the lame (not badass) dragon.

I read a review where they mention the protagonist ( a dragon) says” Game of f... Thrones” and I decided this would be my next read. I wonder if an Irish author is going to reflect Louisiana correctly or just give a tired, stereotypical cartoon version of the southern US. Still, I think it worth the risk
