Poland
Poland: A Novel | James Albert Michener
Like the heroic land that is its subject, Poland teems with vivid events and unforgettable characters in the sweeping span of eight tumultuous centuries. In a tradition of resistance to barbarian Tatar invaders and brutal Nazi occupiers, with a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, three Polish families live out their destinies and - and the drama of a nation.

A descriptive history of Poland's odd way of getting a leader. Basically they voted on a royal member of other European nations. This is why Russia and Germany and others were always trying to annex it. Very complicated and very sad.

Susanita I read this years ago. The main thing I remember is the prolonged sieges. 4y
ChasingOm I love Michener‘s books but I haven‘t read this one! (edited) 4y

After doing some research I found a last book (blacked out in picture) for #BasicWitchSwap . I just didn't have faith that if I ordered a book it would get here on time for me to ship on time. Just need to get a couple of goodies and I'm hoping to have it shipped next weekend.

Of course I also had to pick up some books for myself. Two are off my #TBR and the tagged book was just a random choice. Looks good though!

S3V3N I read the first 2 and they were both great. 4y
One_With_Books The Nickel Boys was soooo good. I actually read it a few times. 4y
Jess861 @BeaG @One_With_Books - both have been on my TBR for a while so I can't wait to read them. I loved The Underground Railroad so I'm hoping The Nickel Boys is just as good! 4y

#unreadandontheshelf

This week has some 500+ page books. With self-distancing/quarantine maybe I‘ll get to some of these sooner rather than later.

Have you read any of these? Which do you recommend?

Stay safe out there!

Andrew65 Loved Poland. 5y

I haven‘t read this, but my mother is a huge Michener fan - we visited St. Michaels Maryland because he lived there - so she probably has. #poland #letstravelaugust @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

Dear Carolina, @CaroPi

As you can see, even the kisses and peanut butter cups made it. Since the cats started playing with those instantly, I had to rescue them first.

Thank you for the Polish chocolates, haven't had those in years. My lovely Polish born friend, in Krakow even, moved away years ago and we lost contact, she used to spoil me with these chocolates. 😘😘😘

CaroPi Oh I saw the other message before! So happy everything arrive! Also I feel even more happy that you know those chocolates 6y

The Poland and Czech Republic section of Stanford‘s travel bookshop in London 💖💖 just as good as Daunt in my opinion but much less well known. I‘m getting ready for my Warsaw trip in January and got a gorgeous book for by bf‘s Christmas gift to get hyped beforehand. I‘m struggling to find a good Warsaw travel guide so will have to get on amazon unfortunately

Another #Augustisatrip prompt, another Michener book! This one I *do* remember reading. There‘s a particularly memorable section about a siege on a city in #Poland with a name I couldn‘t pronounce.

Andrew65 I really enjoyed this one, but a lot of years since I read it. 6y

Many years since I read this book but did love it at the time, giving you the history of Poland over eight centuries through the story of 3 families. #SetInEasternEurope #uncannyOctober

My #aprilreads. It was a good month for lengthy novels, and really difficult to choose the best of April, as I read so many great ones this month.
