TODAY‘S PROMPT: RIVER

I read this book in 2018 but did not write a full review of the book…..only these comments. This was before I was reviewing. 😊

Loved the book...the strong female characters were wonderful. My friend recommended this book to me...it really kept my interest. I would like to read more from Tademy.

Eggs The cover reminds me of Louisiana-homes on the bayou 🩵🩵 8mo
SilversReviews @Eggs I forget where the book is set, but it could be in Louisiana. Thanks for your comment. 8mo

I thoroughly enjoyed this very personal novel, based on the author‘s family history. It‘s intense, but very timely, especially in light of discussions about teaching Black history. Highly recommend. We‘ve been on vacation, so I‘m behind on posting. Photo is from a hike we took in NC, since I have nothing that pertains to the book.

Soubhiville Is that Graveyard Fields? 3y
Lynnsoprano @Soubhiville No, it‘s Catawba Falls. These old bones were not going to try to climb the rocks for a closer look 😄 3y
Soubhiville Another beautiful spot. I just love that part of the mountains! 3y
Lynnsoprano @Soubhiville We do too! We had planned to hike the falls in DuPont State Forest, but construction on the highway between Asheville and Hendersonville was a mess, so we tried avoid that area. 3y
Soubhiville Luckily you can go in just about any direction from Asheville and wind up someplace this beautiful in 45 minutes or so! 3y

Hubby picked this up at a used book sale, and raved about. I just started it, and I can already see why he was so enthusiastic.

AshleyHoss820 Oh, this is a favorite of mine! My Mom, sister, and I rarely love the same books but we all adore this one! Enjoy!! 😊 4y
Tattooedteacher @AshleyHoss820 I loved this one also. My mom and I read it together. 4y
ValerieAndBooks One that has been on my radar for years! 4y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks I‘m having a hard time putting it down. This copy is falling apart, literally, but I will be glad to send it on when I‘ve finished. 4y
Anne1103 I don‘t always keep the books I have once I‘ve read them, I like to pass them on and tell the recipient to do the same. This one has been sitting on my shelf for years since I read it and it‘s not going anywhere.🥰 3y

A story of four generations of African-American slaves that stop at nothing to keep the spirit of their people alive despite great adversity. Join them in their great happiness and struggles in a world that tries to crushes them but can never break their indestructible spirits. You will never ever forget Suzette, whose voice carries the stories of her ancestors- a voice that joyfully haunts.

Lalita Tademy's Cane River was reminiscent, for me, of Alex Haley's Roots or Ernest J. Gaines's The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman in the scope of its consideration of slavery. The book details the lives of four generations of Creole women, beginning in the midst of slavery in Louisiana with Elisabeth and her daughter Suzette. I listened on Scribd, and the narrators provide a strong voice and storytelling feel to the novel. (continued ⬇️)

UnabridgedPod The focus here is on character, and while those who have read a great deal about slavery will not be surprised, it's the details of these women's lives that are most striking and affecting. I highly recommend Tademy's novel, which is based on the history of her family. 6y

I couldn't keep up with the characters and I was never drawn in to the story line.
